UPI Not Working: Why Payments Fail and How to Fix Them

Quick answer UPI usually fails because of a bank server fault, a wrong PIN, a daily limit or a weak connection. Check these in order, and never pay twice before the status is clear.

UPI not working is a worry that always shows up at the worst time: the payment screen may say declined, pending, bank server down or technical error, and you are left standing at the counter with a bill. The cause is often not your phone. It can be your bank's server, a limit you reached, or a SIM and network problem.

This page is the starting point for every UPI failure. It shows how to sort the cause quickly, what to do if money has left your account, and which detailed guide to open for your app or bank. You will also find where the *99# route fits in.

Common causes

  • 1Your bank's server is slow or down

What fixes itWait and retry later, or pay with another linked bank account

  • 2Wrong UPI PIN or PIN locked

How to tellMessage about incorrect PIN or too many attempts

What fixes itReset the PIN from the app using your debit card details, entered only inside the app

  • 3Daily limit or transaction count reached

How to tellEarlier payments went through today and now limit exceeded appears

What fixes itTry again tomorrow, or pay from a different account or by another method

  • 4Weak internet or SIM not verified

How to tellSpinner hangs, or the app wants to confirm your mobile number once more

  • 5Low balance or account issue

How to tellInsufficient funds, or the account is frozen or KYC is pending

What fixes itCheck the balance, then ask the bank about account status

  • 6Wrong UPI ID or QR code

How to tellInvalid payee or the name shown is not the one you expect

What fixes itRe-enter the ID and check the receiver name before paying

  • 7App out of date or bank not linked well

How to tellOnly one app fails and the bank list or account will not load

What fixes itUpdate the app and relink the bank account

Where to start

  1. Read the exact failure message

Do not just retry. Note whether it says declined, pending, failed or timed out. Each means a different next step, and the UPI error codes page explains the common ones.

  2. Check your balance and your bank's messages

Look at your bank SMS or passbook in the bank app. If money was debited, wait and do not pay again. The bank normally credits a failed payment back to your account on its own, usually in a few days.

  3. Try a small payment to someone you trust

A tiny test payment tells you whether UPI works at all for your account. If it works, the earlier failure was a limit or the receiver's problem.

  4. Test the internet connection

Open a web page. If it is slow, use the other kind of connection. See mobile data not working if the signal itself is the issue.

  5. Refresh the app, then reboot

Install the latest version of your payment app from the official store, reboot the phone, then reopen it. Old versions often break after bank-side changes.

  6. Check the SIM and registered number

Your bank account is tied to your mobile number through the SIM. A new SIM, a swapped slot or no signal can make that check fail. Insert the registered SIM in the slot you used before and try again.

  7. Set a new UPI PIN when yours is locked

Choose the option for a forgotten PIN in the app. Enter your card details only on that official screen. Never share a PIN or OTP with anybody, even someone claiming to call from the helpline.

  8. Use another account or app, then contact the bank

If your bank is the problem, link a second account or use another UPI app. For money stuck or debited without success, raise a complaint in the app's help section or visit your bank branch.

UPI not working today: the usual reasons

When many people pay at once, such as on salary day, festival evenings or month end, some banks slow down for a few hours. Your own app may look fine while the bank behind it is overloaded. A quick way to tell is to try a second app or a different account. If both fail with a bank error, it is most likely the bank, and waiting is the better move.

You scan a shop QR code and see Your bank server is not responding. Try again later. Do not keep tapping pay. Wait five minutes, check for a debit message, and then try once more.

Declined, pending and failed are not the same

What each payment status usually means
StatusMeaningWhat to do
FailedPayment did not go throughCheck for debit; retry if none
PendingBanks are still confirmingWait; do not pay again at once
DeclinedBank refused it (PIN, limit, balance)Fix the cause named in the message
Debited but not receivedMoney left, receiver not credited yetWait for auto reversal, then raise a complaint

UPI through *99# and offline options

The *99# service lets some users pay without mobile data, using a menu on the phone dialler. It needs the SIM linked to the bank account and may not work on every operator or bank. If it fails, check the registered number and the network signal, and ask your bank whether your account supports it.

When to go to the bank

Visit the bank or use its in-app help if a debit is not reversed after the stated time, your account is blocked, or the UPI PIN keeps failing after a reset. Keep the payment reference number and a screenshot ready, because they speed up the complaint.

General information only. Money disputes are handled by the bank or the payment provider's own help desk. Keep your PIN and OTP to yourself always.

Frequently asked questions

Why is UPI not working today?

Typical causes: the bank's server is struggling, many people are paying at once, the signal is poor, or a limit has been hit. Pay through a second app or account and watch whether the same bank error returns.

Why is my UPI not working even when I have balance?

The PIN may be locked, the daily limit may be used up, or the SIM may not be verified. Read the exact message on the screen to see which one it is.

Is UPI ID not working a problem with my bank?

Not always. A UPI ID can fail because of a typing mistake, an inactive handle or a receiver account problem. Check the name shown before you pay.

What if money is debited but the payment failed?

Wait for the automatic reversal, which banks usually finish in a few days. If it does not arrive, file a complaint through the payment app or your branch with the reference number.

Why is *99# not working for UPI?

Check that you use the SIM linked to the bank account, that you have signal, and that your bank supports the service. Contact the bank if it still fails.
