This site is not affiliated with PhonePe; this is an independent explanation.
When PhonePe not working is your complaint, it usually falls into one of three shapes: the app refuses to open, it opens but payments fail, or it shows money as pending that you cannot trace. Spotting your shape first saves time, because the causes are not the same.
The checks below start with the likeliest culprits, and later sections explain how to separate a PhonePe outage from a fault on your own phone or bank. For codes shown on the failure screen, see UPI error codes, and for the bigger picture read UPI not working.
Consider this page a general aid. When your account is debited but the payment is incomplete, the dispute goes to your bank or to the help section in PhonePe. No genuine caller needs your UPI PIN, OTP or card details.
Common causes

2Registered SIM missing or changed
How to tellNumber verification is requested again
What fixes itReinsert the registered SIM and allow SMS access
3Bank server delay

What fixes itPause for half an hour, then test with a small amount or a different linked bank
4Service outage on the provider side
How to tellMany users report the same failure at the same time
What fixes itHold on and watch the official support page for notices
5Old app version or full phone storage
How to tellApp crashes at launch or freezes after update prompts
What fixes itMake room, install the update and reboot
6Wrong PIN, limit or account hold
How to tellMessages about PIN, daily limit or account status
What fixes itCorrect the PIN, let the limit reset or ask the bank
7Wrong date and time on the phone
How to tellApp says it cannot connect securely even with good internet
What fixes itSet date and time to automatic
How to fix it, step by step
Restart the app from recents
Dismiss the app from the multitasking view, count to ten and launch it again. A frozen screen often clears that way. If a payment was in progress, glance at your bank record before paying again.
Check the connection elsewhere
Play a short video or load a site. If those crawl too, fix the connection first: toggle airplane mode, switch network, or restart the router. Detailed help is in internet not working and WiFi not working.
Check the registered SIM and SMS
UPI apps verify your number by sending an SMS in the background. The SIM must be in the phone, with signal, and the app must be allowed to send and read the verification message. If the SIM has a problem, see SIM card not working.
Set date and time to automatic
In phone settings, find the clock section and let the network supply both the time and the time zone. A clock that is off by even a few minutes can break secure connections.
Free storage, then update
Get the newest release from the store. A nearly full phone struggles to run apps, so remove big videos or apps you never use first.
Clear cached files on Android
On Android, the settings app has a storage page for each app where you can remove cached files alone. Erasing everything would send you back to login and bank linking. iPhone has no cache option, so reinstalling is the nearest step, but only do it if you know your login details.
Check each linked bank account
If payments fail only from one account, the problem is with that bank or its link. Try a small payment from another linked account to confirm. For one bank's issues, read the page about one bank's UPI trouble for a worked example.
Reboot the phone and test again
Rebooting stops stuck background processes that interfere with the connection. When the phone is back, start with a small payment.
Use the in-app help for stuck money
If the payment is pending or the money has not returned, open the app's help area and quote the transaction reference. Do not trust helpline numbers found through random web searches or messages.
Why PhonePe not working today: outage or just you?
Request a contact using another carrier to send a tiny payment from the same app. Look at the provider's official support page or social account for notices. If several people see the same failure at the same moment, the service is likely having trouble and the best move is to wait and stop retrying. If everyone else is fine, the problem is local: your SIM, app, internet, bank link or phone settings.
You scan a QR at a shop and the app shows The payment did not go through. Please try again. The shopkeeper says other customers paid fine a minute ago. The trouble then sits with your handset or bank link, so begin with the internet and the SIM.
App will not open versus payments failing
| Symptom | Most likely area | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| App crashes on launch | Phone storage or old version | Update, free space, restart |
| Stuck on loading | Internet or server | Switch network, wait |
| Opens but payment fails | Bank, PIN or limit | Read the message, check the bank |
| Asks to verify number | SIM or SMS permission | Check SIM and allow SMS |
| Money cut, no confirmation | Pending transaction | Wait, check statement, then in-app help |
After changing your phone or SIM
A new phone needs a fresh setup. Install the app, log in with the same mobile number, allow the SMS permission and relink your bank account. The SIM that holds the registered number must be in the phone, and the bank may block UPI for a short time after a device change as a safety step. Be patient and avoid trying several times in a row, which can lock UPI for a while.
Who to ask: your bank or the app team
Go to the bank when only one account fails, when a hold is mentioned, or when a debit stays unreversed past the period the app states. Go to the app support for login trouble, verification or a missing payment record. Reach either one through the official app or the bank's own website. For payments at toll plazas, the problem may be on the tag side, so see FASTag not working.
Frequently asked questions
Why is PhonePe not working today?
It could be a temporary outage, a bank delay, weak internet or a SIM issue. Try another app, and have a contact on a separate carrier test it too, to find where the fault lies.
Why is my PhonePe not working even with good internet?
Check the registered SIM and SMS permission, the phone date and time, and the app version. A bank or PIN problem can also block payments with perfect internet.
Is PhonePe down for everyone?
Check the provider's official support account and ask others to try a small payment. If many people see the same failure, wait and avoid repeated attempts.
Money was deducted but PhonePe shows failed. What do I do?
Reversal happens by itself and usually takes a few working days. If it still has not shown, file a complaint from the app's help area or at your bank with the transaction reference to hand.
Why does the phone pe app keep crashing?
Low storage, an old app version or a bad update are common causes. Make room on the phone, install the update, reboot and try once more.
