This site is not affiliated with Paytm; this is an independent explanation.
When Paytm not working is what you see, start by naming the exact thing that fails: the app will not open, UPI payments are declined, the wallet will not pay, or a bank account link shows an error. These are separate parts, and a fault in one often leaves the others fine.
This page gives the checks in order, then explains how to tell a service problem from a fault on your phone, and what to do when the wallet or a linked account shows a status message. For failure screens with a short code, see UPI error codes, and for general UPI trouble see UPI not working.
These notes are general. Should your money leave the account without the payment completing, the dispute goes through your bank or the Paytm help section. Your UPI PIN, OTP and card details stay with you alone.

Identify what exactly fails
Write down whether it is the app opening, UPI, the wallet, or adding money. Then read the message on the screen word by word. The message often names the real cause, such as a limit, a bank issue or a verification step.
Check your connection
Try loading any site on this network. If it is sluggish or fails, sort that out first. Toggle airplane mode, move between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or restart the router. See WiFi not working if the home network is the issue.
Reopen the app from scratch
Dismiss the app from recents, pause briefly and start it again. If a payment was under way, read your bank entries before sending it a second time.
Fetch the latest version and reboot
Fetch the newest version from your phone's store and then reboot so background services begin fresh. Test with a small payment rather than a big one.
Check the SIM and SMS permission
The number you registered has to sit on a live SIM in the handset. Allow the app to send and read SMS so that it can verify the number. If the SIM misbehaves, read SIM card not working.
Clear cached files on Android
Android phones let you reach the app's storage page in settings, where you clear the cached files only. Clearing everything forces a fresh login and relinking of accounts.
Test another bank account or payment method
If UPI fails from one account, try a small payment from a second linked account, or use the wallet if it is available to you. This shows whether the fault lies with the app or the bank. For example checks for one bank, see the one-bank UPI troubleshooting page.
Contact support from inside the app
Use the help section within the app for pending payments, wallet balance questions or account notices. Avoid phone numbers or links from random messages and search results.
Why Paytm not working today: your phone or the service?
To tell the difference, ask someone on another network to try a small payment, and check the provider's official support account for any notice. If several people report the same failure at once, the service has a problem and waiting is the correct fix. If nobody else is affected, look at your SIM, internet, app version, bank link and phone date and time.
The app opens, but every UPI payment shows Payment failed, please try again. Your friend, using the same app, pays fine. That points to your linked bank account or your UPI PIN setup, not to the whole service.
Paytm wallet and Paytm bank status
People often search to check whether the wallet or the bank side of Paytm is working. These are different from UPI. A wallet payment uses money stored in the wallet and follows its own limits and verification rules. A payments bank account follows banking rules and any notices from the bank or the regulator. If the app shows a message that a service is limited for your account, believe the message and follow its instructions, and do not rely on rumours.
If your wallet balance is not visible or a service is paused, the in-app help and the official announcements are the only reliable sources. If you rely on one account for daily spending, keep a second bank account linked to a different UPI app as a backup. See also another UPI app page and one more.
Which part is failing: a quick table
| What you see | Likely area | First check |
|---|---|---|
| App will not open | Phone storage or version | Update and restart |
| Login asks for verification again | SIM or SMS | Registered SIM and permission |
| UPI fails for one bank only | Bank side | Try another account |
| Wallet declines | Wallet limit or status | Read the in-app message |
| Add money fails | Bank or payment link | Check bank statement, retry later |
Money debited but not received
Do not pay again straight away. Open the transaction in the app and see whether it says success, pending or failed. Pending items usually settle within a day, and failed ones return to the source in a few working days. If the time has passed, raise a complaint inside the app with the reference number, and also tell your bank if the debit came from a bank account. Keep screenshots of the payment and the statement entry.
How to keep payments steady
- Keep a backup UPI app linked to a second account.
- Update the app when new versions arrive, and keep some free phone storage.
- Do not change the SIM without telling the bank about the number change.
- Check notices in the app, since limits and verification steps are explained there.
- Never share your PIN or OTP, even with someone who sounds official.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Paytm not working today?
Possible reasons are a short service problem, a bank delay, poor internet or a SIM and permission gap. Have someone else try a small payment to learn whether you alone are affected.
Why is my Paytm not working for UPI but the app opens?
The app opening only means the app is fine. UPI also depends on your bank, PIN, limit and registered SIM, so check those and read the failure message.
Is the Paytm wallet working or not?
Open the wallet in the app and read any notice on screen. Wallet services follow their own limits and verification rules, and the in-app message is the reliable answer.
How can I tell if the Paytm bank is working?
Check the notices inside the app and the official announcements of the provider. Avoid forwarded messages and rumours, which are often wrong.
Why does the Paytm app keep closing?
Low storage, an old version or a bad update are the usual reasons. Free some space, update the app, restart the phone and open it again.
