GPay not working usually means you are staring at a payment that will not go through, an app that will not open, or a scanner that stays blank. Google Pay depends on three things at the same time: your phone, the UPI system, and your bank. A fault in any one stops the payment.
The fast path is to see which of the three is the problem. Check your internet and app first, then your UPI PIN and bank account, then whether the bank or UPI is having a slow period. Never repeat a payment until you have checked your bank balance, so you do not pay twice.
Common causes
1Weak internet or no data
How to tellThe app spins forever, or says it cannot connect, other apps are slow too
What fixes itFlip to the other connection type and test again
2Bank server slow or down
How to tellPayments fail for one bank while another bank account works
What fixes itWait and retry later, or pay from a different linked account
3Wrong UPI PIN or PIN locked
How to tellMessage mentions incorrect PIN or too many attempts
What fixes itEnter the right PIN, or reset the UPI PIN from the app; never share it
4Daily limit or per payment limit reached
How to tellFailure mentions limit exceeded, mostly after several payments in a day
What fixes itWait till the next day, or use another account or method
5Phone number or SIM changed
How to tellApp asks you to verify again, or says the SIM was not found
What fixes itKeep the registered SIM in the phone and verify the number again
6Old app or cache problem
How to tellApp crashes, shows a blank screen or the scanner will not scan
What fixes itUpdate the app and clear its cache
7Date, time or security setting problem
How to tellApp says it cannot verify, and the phone clock is off
What fixes itLet the phone set its clock automatically
How to fix it, step by step
Check your connection first
Open a web page on the same phone. If it is slow, hop to the other kind of connection. A payment started on a shaky connection may hang, so wait for a stable signal before you try again.
Check whether money has left the account
Open your bank app or look for the debit message. If money has been deducted but the payment shows pending, do not pay again. Failed or pending UPI payments are usually reversed by the bank to your account after some time.
Close and reopen the app
Remove the app from the recent list and start it fresh. A frozen payment screen often clears after a fresh open. Then try the payment with a small amount to test.
Update Google Pay and your phone
Open your phone's app store and update the app. An old version can fail with security or server changes. Keep the phone's system updated as well.
Fix date, time and permissions
Set the clock to follow the network in phone settings. Also allow the permissions the app asks for, such as camera for scanning and SMS or phone for SIM checks. Without camera permission the scanner will stay blank.
Verify the SIM and phone number
UPI links your bank account to the phone number on the SIM. Make sure that SIM is active, in the phone, and chosen for SMS. On dual SIM phones, the right slot must be set when the app asks.
Check the linked bank account
Open the app's bank accounts section and confirm the account is still linked and the right one is set as primary. If a bank was closed or a card changed, remove it and add the account again.
Reset the UPI PIN if it is blocked
In the bank account details, choose the option to reset or change the UPI PIN. You will be asked for details to confirm identity in the official flow. Never tell the PIN, an OTP or any code to another person, even a caller who says they are from the bank.
Clear the cache or reinstall as a last step
On Android, the app info page has a storage section where the cache can be cleared. If it still fails, uninstall, reinstall and sign in again. Your accounts come back after verification.
Why GPay not working today is usually a bank or network issue
On busy days, such as salary day, festival shopping or the end of the month, banks handle more payments than usual and some respond slowly. You see this as failures with a bank or technical error message. To tell whether it is the bank, try paying a small amount from a different bank account in the same app. If that works, the first bank is slow. See also UPI not working for the wider picture.
You scan a shop's code and the screen says Payment failed. Your money will be refunded if debited. Check your bank message. If nothing was debited, try once again after a few minutes. If it was debited, wait for the automatic reversal.
GPay scanner and camera problems
If the scanner is blank or will not read a code, check the camera permission, wipe the lens, increase screen brightness on the other phone, and hold steady about a hand's length away. On an iPhone, make sure the camera is allowed in settings for the app. If the phone camera itself is broken, read phone camera not working. You can also pay by choosing a contact or typing the UPI ID.
Common GPay error messages
| Message type | Likely cause | First thing to try |
|---|---|---|
| Bank server not responding | Bank or UPI slow | Wait and retry, or use another account |
| Incorrect PIN | Wrong PIN entered | Retry carefully or reset PIN |
| Limit exceeded | Daily or per payment cap | Wait for the next day |
| Cannot verify device or SIM | SIM or number mismatch | Verify with the registered SIM |
| Something went wrong | Temporary app or network fault | Reopen the app and retry later |
More codes are explained in UPI error codes.
When to contact your bank or the app
If money left your account and was not reversed within the time your bank states, raise a complaint through the bank's own app or the help section inside Google Pay, using the transaction ID. Keep a screenshot of the failed payment. Do not call numbers you find in search results or message groups.
This page is general information. Disputes and refunds are handled by your bank or the payment app through their official help. Never share your PIN, OTP or card details with anyone.
Frequently asked questions
Why is GPay not working today?
It may be a slow bank, a UPI network slowdown, or a problem on your phone. Try a small payment from another bank account, and check your internet connection.
Why is my GPay scanner not working on iPhone?
Check that camera access is allowed for the app in iPhone settings, clean the lens and hold the phone steady. Updating the app often helps too.
Will my money come back if a payment fails?
If a payment fails after the money was deducted, the bank normally sends it back to your account within its stated time. If it does not, raise a complaint with your bank.
Why does GPay say I need to verify my phone number?
The app checks that your registered SIM is in the phone. Insert the same SIM, keep it active and allow the permissions, then verify again.
Can I use GPay without internet?
No. A payment needs data or Wi-Fi to reach the bank. Some banks offer offline UPI options that work differently, which you can ask the bank about.
