FASTag Not Working: Checks, Fixes and What to Do at the Toll

Quick answer FASTag fails mostly from low balance, a blocked tag, a badly placed sticker or a reader fault. Check balance and status, then ask the toll staff.

When FASTag not working is the problem you face, the toll barrier stays shut or the lane shows a red signal, even though the tag is stuck on the windscreen. The cause is usually simple: not enough balance, a tag that is blocked or inactive, a sticker in the wrong place, or a lane reader that did not scan.

This page helps you find out which one it is, both while standing at the toll and later at home. It also explains why the tag app may not open or recharge. For the money side of recharge failures, the UPI pages such as UPI not working may also help.

General guidance only. A wrong deduction is taken up with the bank or company that gave you the tag, through its official app or help desk. Nobody who offers to fix the tag needs your OTP or PIN.

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Stay calm and stop before the barrier

Do not reverse sharply or drive through the barrier. Switch on hazard lights, and tell the toll staff your tag is not reading. They can check the tag, scan it by hand, or direct you to another lane.

  2. Check the balance in the tag app

Open your tag provider's app or message alert and look at the balance. Many tags fail simply because the balance dropped below the amount needed for that toll. Recharge and wait a few minutes, since the update may not reach the lane instantly.

  3. Look at the tag status

The app usually shows whether the tag is active or blocked, and why. Common reasons are incomplete KYC, a chargeback, or a vehicle detail mismatch. Fix what the app asks for.

  4. Inspect the sticker itself

The tag should be stuck on the inside of the windscreen, near the rear view mirror, facing outward, and not covered by film or a sticker. If it is cracked, scratched or has been peeled off once, it may not read. A tag removed and re-stuck often stops working, and a new one is then needed.

  5. Wipe the glass and tag

Dust, oil or a dirty windscreen can weaken the signal a little. Clean the glass around the tag with a soft dry cloth, then try the lane again.

  6. Try another lane

If the reader at one lane has a fault, another lane may read the same tag without trouble. Do this only when staff allow you to move.

  7. Check that the vehicle number matches

The tag must belong to your vehicle number. A tag taken from an older vehicle, or a number entered wrongly during registration, will cause a mismatch and a rejection.

  8. Contact the issuer and keep records

Use the help option inside the official tag app or your bank's channel. Keep screenshots, toll receipts and the payment reference. If you were charged wrongly, raise it there and not with a stranger who messages you.

How to check if your FASTag is working or not, and what to do when FASTag not working

You can check a tag in a few ways without driving to a toll. Look at the app: it should show an active status, the right vehicle number and a positive balance. Check that you received an alert message after the last toll or recharge. Check the sticker: it should be intact, flat and in the right place. A tag that shows active in the app but is damaged on the glass can still fail at the lane, so the physical check matters as much as the app.

At the toll, the display flashes Low balance although you recharged just now. Do not recharge again at once. Wait a few minutes, check the app balance, and show the staff your recharge confirmation if the lane still rejects the tag.

FASTag recharge not working

A failed recharge is usually a payment problem rather than a tag problem. Check that your UPI or bank link is working with a small test payment elsewhere, then retry the recharge. If the amount left your account but the balance did not rise, wait for the update, since it can take a short while. If the issue remains, raise it with the tag issuer or your bank with the payment reference. Common UPI failures are covered in UPI error codes, and bank specific help is in the bank UPI page.

FASTag app not working

When the tag app will not open, the fix is usually the same as for any app: update it, check your internet, restart the phone and log in again. If the app says your mobile number does not match, the number linked to the tag may differ from your current SIM. Contact the issuer to update it. If the internet is the weak point, see mobile data not working.

When to replace the tag

Signs that the tag needs replacing instead of repairing
What you seeLikely meaningNext step
Sticker torn or peeledTag damagedGet a new tag from the issuer
Tag kept in the car, not stuckMay not read properlyFix it on the glass as instructed
Active in app, fails in many lanesPossible tag faultAsk the issuer to test or replace it
Changed vehicle or numberTag no longer matchesRegister a new tag for the new vehicle

Do not try to open or modify the tag. It is a sealed item, and tampering can get it blocked.

How to avoid trouble at the next toll

  • Keep a margin in the balance, so a long trip with several tolls does not run it dry.
  • Turn on alerts so you know after every deduction.
  • Check the status before long drives, not at the barrier.
  • Use only one tag per vehicle.
  • Keep the glass clear near the tag and avoid tint strips over it.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my FASTag not working?

The common causes are low balance, a blocked or inactive tag, a damaged or wrongly placed sticker, or a reader fault at the lane. Check the app first, then the sticker.

What should I do if FASTag is not working at the toll?

Stop before the barrier, tell the staff, and ask for manual scanning or another lane. Check the app for balance and status while waiting.

How do I check whether my FASTag is working or not?

Open the official app and check that the tag is active, that the vehicle number is right and that the balance is enough. Also check the sticker for damage.

My FASTag recharge is not working. What now?

Test your UPI or bank link, retry once, and wait for the balance to update. If money left your account without a credit, raise it with the issuer using the payment reference.

Why is the FASTag app not working?

Update the app, check your internet and log in again. If the mobile number no longer matches, ask the issuer to update it.

Can a FASTag stop working by itself?

Yes, if the balance drops, the tag gets blocked for a pending detail, or the sticker is damaged. It does not usually fail without one of these reasons.
