Mobile Data Not Working: Why It Happens and What to Do

Quick answer Usually it is a switched-off data toggle, a used-up daily limit, a weak signal or a stuck network registration. Most cases fix in minutes.

Mobile data not working means your phone shows signal bars but pages will not load, apps keep spinning and the data icon may be missing or crossed out. People often search "why is my mobile data not working" right after a recharge, a SIM change or a software update, and those are indeed the three moments when it breaks most often.

The fault sits in one of three places: your phone settings, your SIM and plan, or the operator's network in your area. This guide checks them in that order, because the first two are yours to fix and take only a minute each. If your phone is fine and the network is the problem, you will find out how to prove that and what to tell the operator.

  • 7Data saver or restriction on one app

What fixes itAllow unrestricted data for the app in its settings

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Switch mobile data off and on

Pull down the quick settings panel and tap the mobile data tile twice. On an iPhone open Settings, then Mobile Service (or Cellular), and flip Mobile Data. It sounds too simple, but it clears a stuck data session often enough to be worth ten seconds.

  2. Use airplane mode as a reset

Turn airplane mode on, count to fifteen, and turn it off. The phone then registers with the nearest tower again and asks for a fresh data connection.

  3. Look at your balance, validity and daily limit

Open the operator's app or check the plan message. A daily quota that is over, or a plan that ended last night, explains most "sudden" failures. If the quota is over, speed may fall to a crawl instead of stopping completely.

  4. Switch Wi-Fi off and test again

A Wi-Fi network with no internet makes the phone ignore mobile data on some models. Turn Wi-Fi off, then open a website. If you want to know why the router fails, see Wi-Fi not working.

  5. Set the network mode to automatic

Find the Mobile network page in your phone settings (the name differs by make) and look for the preferred network type. Choose the option with the highest generation that says automatic, such as 5G/4G/3G/2G auto. A phone locked to one type can lose data in a weak area.

  6. Check roaming and access point names

On Android, open the Mobile network screen and confirm that Data roaming matches your situation. Next, open Access point names and pick the reset option from the menu. Avoid typing values copied from random websites, since one wrong entry blocks data.

  7. Take the SIM out and put it back

Switch the phone off, pull out the SIM tray, wipe the SIM's metal contacts with a soft dry cloth and slide it back in. If the phone then reports no SIM at all, go to SIM card not working.

  8. Restart the phone and install pending updates

A full restart clears background services that hold the data connection. If the problem began after an update, check for a newer one, since phone makers often patch mobile network bugs quickly.

  9. Reset network settings as the last step

This removes saved Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings and custom APN entries, but not your photos or apps. On Android look under Reset options, and on iPhone under Transfer or Reset iPhone, then Reset Network Settings.

What mobile data not working really means

Your phone has two separate links: the voice link, which carries calls and SMS, and the data link, which carries everything online. They share the same SIM and tower, but the data link needs extra permission from the operator, a working plan and the right settings. That is why calls can work perfectly while the internet does not.

You see full bars, a call goes through, but the browser says No internet connection and your chat app shows "Connecting". That pattern points to the data link only: check the data switch, the daily quota and the access point names.

Is it your phone or the network?

Put your SIM in a second phone, or put a friend's SIM from the same operator in yours. Use this table to read the result.

Operators sometimes post planned work and outages on their official app or social account, which is the safest place to check.

When only some apps lose data

If the browser loads but one app does not, the fault is in the app, not the connection. Open the app's info page in settings, find mobile data usage and make sure background data and unrestricted data are allowed. Data saver mode and battery saver can both cut an app off. For help with one specific app, see apps and websites not working.

When to visit the operator's store

Go to the store with your ID if the SIM fails in two different phones, if the plan shows active but data stays blocked for a full day, or if the SIM is old and the phone says it is not registered. Ask them to check that data is provisioned on your number and to replace the SIM if needed.

Never share OTPs or your SIM card number with callers who say they will "fix your data". Genuine help comes through the operator's app or store.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my mobile data not working but calls are fine?

Calls use the voice link, while internet uses a separate data link that needs an active plan, the data switch and correct settings. Check the switch, your daily quota and the network mode first.

Why is my mobile data on but not working on Android?

The icon only shows that data is allowed, not that it flows. Common reasons are a used-up quota, a Wi-Fi network with no internet, a wrong access point setting or a weak signal. Toggle airplane mode and test with Wi-Fi off.

Why is my network not working in the evening, and why my network is not working at night?

Towers get crowded when many people are online, and speeds drop. Some plans also cut speed after a daily limit. Check your remaining data, and try again at a quieter hour.

Will resetting network settings delete my photos?

No. It only clears saved Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings and mobile network settings. Photos, contacts and apps stay put; only the Wi-Fi networks need to be joined again.

Why is my net not working after a recharge?

Sometimes the plan takes a few minutes to activate. Restart the phone or toggle airplane mode. If data is still blocked after an hour, ask the operator to confirm that the pack is active on your number.
