A mobile hotspot not working usually means one of two things: your phone has no real internet to share, or your laptop or second phone is unable to join the hotspot. The hotspot is only a doorway. If the phone behind it has no data, the doorway leads nowhere.
People often say "mobile data working but hotspot not working", and that is a useful clue. It points to a plan rule, a saved setting, or a band mismatch rather than a dead signal. Work through the steps below from top to bottom. Most cases are solved in the first four.
Common causes
1The phone itself has no working internet

2Hotspot data is limited or blocked by the plan

3Battery saver or data saver is on

4Wrong band for the other device

What fixes itRestart the phone, then reset network settings if it persists
How to fix it, step by step
Check that the host phone has internet
Switch Wi-Fi off on the phone that is sharing. Open a website using only mobile data. If nothing loads, stop here and fix that first with the guide on mobile data not working. A hotspot cannot be better than the data behind it.
Turn the hotspot off, wait, and turn it on
Flip the hotspot switch off, count to ten, then flip it back on. Then turn Wi-Fi off and on at the laptop or second phone so it scans again. This clears a stuck session in many cases.
Toggle airplane mode on the host phone
Turn airplane mode on for fifteen seconds, then off. The phone re-registers with the tower and gets a fresh data connection. Turn the hotspot on only after the signal bars return.
Turn off battery saver and data saver
Power saving modes often cut the hotspot to protect battery. On Android, check the battery saver and data saver switches. On iPhone, turn off Low Power Mode and Low Data Mode for your cellular plan. Keep the phone plugged in while sharing for a long time.
Change the hotspot band or compatibility
On many Android phones the hotspot screen lets you pick 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. Older laptops and cheaper phones only see 2.4 GHz. On iPhone, the Personal Hotspot screen has a Maximize Compatibility switch that does the same job.
Forget the network on the other device
On the laptop, open the Wi-Fi list, find the hotspot name and choose Forget. Join again and type the password fresh. If you changed the hotspot name or password lately, the old saved entry will keep failing.
Check the hotspot name and password
Open the hotspot screen and read the current password. On iPhone, keep that screen open while the other device joins, because the hotspot sometimes hides until the screen is open. Avoid special characters in the hotspot name if the laptop is old.
Reset the network settings only at the end
On Android, look for Reset Wi-Fi, mobile and Bluetooth under the system reset options. On iPhone, use Reset Network Settings under Transfer or Reset iPhone. This erases saved Wi-Fi passwords, so note them first. Your photos and apps stay untouched.
Why mobile hotspot not working happens when mobile data works
If your phone browses fine but the other device shows "connected, no internet", the data is leaving the phone but not reaching the second device. Three things cause most of this. The plan may allow hotspot use only in limited amounts or not at all. The phone may be using a data setting (called an APN on Android) that works for the phone but blocks tethering. Or the other device may have a fixed DNS or proxy setting from an office network.
Check the plan details first, because it takes a minute. For the APN, open the mobile network settings and look at the access point names. Do not type a new one from a random video; compare it with what the operator's store gives you.
Hotspot not working on laptop versus another phone
| Receiving device | Common problem | Quick fix |
|---|---|---|
| Windows laptop | Hotspot name not listed, or limited access after joining | Turn Wi-Fi off and on, forget the network, use 2.4 GHz |
| Mac | Password accepted but no pages open | Forget the network and rejoin, then restart the Wi-Fi switch |
| Another phone | Joined but browsing fails | Turn off its mobile data and any private DNS setting for a test |
| Smart TV or console | Cannot find the hotspot | Use 2.4 GHz and keep the host phone screen on |
On Windows, you can also right click the Wi-Fi icon and run the built-in network troubleshooter. If the laptop has trouble with every Wi-Fi network, see WiFi not working on laptop.
iPhone Personal Hotspot not working
On an iPhone, Personal Hotspot appears only when cellular data is on and your plan supports sharing. If the switch is missing or greyed out, check Settings, then Cellular, then Cellular Data Options, and make sure data is allowed. Updating iOS and restarting the iPhone fixes many missing-switch cases. If you share with a Mac, make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on for both devices.
You open the Wi-Fi list on a laptop and see the iPhone name, but it says Unable to join the network. Forget the network on the laptop, keep the Personal Hotspot screen open on the iPhone, and join once more with the password shown there.
Wi-Fi and hotspot not working together
Many phones cannot receive Wi-Fi and share a hotspot at the same moment. Some Android models allow it but only on one band. If the hotspot dies whenever you connect to a home router, that is by design on your model. Pick one: mobile data for sharing, or Wi-Fi for yourself. If your home internet is the real problem, read WiFi not working instead.
When to visit the operator or a repair shop
Visit the operator's store if the hotspot works on one SIM but not another, if the plan description says tethering is not included, or if only the hotspot is blocked after your data pack ended. Visit a service centre if the phone restarts or becomes very hot while sharing. Repair cost depends mostly on whether the fault is software (free or cheap) or a damaged antenna or board.
Hotspot use drains battery quickly and can use a lot of data. Watch the data meter so a large download on the laptop does not finish your daily limit in minutes.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my hotspot not working even though my mobile data is on?
The data may be working only for the phone. A plan rule, a battery saver, a band the other device cannot see, or a stale saved password can all stop the hotspot. Check the plan and settings in that order.
Why is my personal hotspot not working in iPhone?
The Personal Hotspot switch needs cellular data and a plan that allows sharing. Restart the iPhone, turn off Low Power Mode, update iOS, and keep the hotspot screen open while the other device connects.
Why is hotspot not working on my laptop?
The laptop may not support the 5 GHz band, or it may hold an old saved password. Forget the hotspot on the laptop, set the phone to 2.4 GHz, and join again.
Why does my hotspot turn off by itself?
Battery saver, data saver or an auto turn off timer on the hotspot screen is usually the reason. Turn those off and keep the phone charged while sharing.
Can I use Wi-Fi and hotspot at the same time?
Only on some phones, and often with limits. If the hotspot stops whenever Wi-Fi connects, your phone does not support both together. Use mobile data for the hotspot and keep Wi-Fi off.
