This site is not affiliated with WhatsApp; this is an independent explanation.
A WhatsApp video call not working can mean it never connects, rings forever, connects with no sound, shows a black picture, or drops after a few seconds. Voice notes can fail in a related way: the record button does nothing, or the recording is silent. All of these use the same parts of your phone, namely the microphone, the camera, the internet and the app's permissions.
That is helpful, because it means a handful of checks fixes most cases. Work through the list below and test one call after each step, so you know which change helped. If the whole app is misbehaving, not only calls, start with the broader WhatsApp problems checklist.
Common causes
1Weak internet on your side or theirs
How to tellCall rings but does not connect, or voice breaks up
What fixes itSwitch Wi-Fi and mobile data, move closer to the router
2Microphone or camera permission is off
How to tellThey cannot hear you, or your video is black
What fixes itAllow microphone and camera for the app
3Data saver for calls is on
How to tellPoor quality or failure only on mobile data
What fixes itTurn off the setting that reduces data use in calls
4Another app is holding the microphone
How to tellVoice notes will not record, calls are silent
What fixes itClose screen recorders and other voice apps
5Wrong audio output, like a Bluetooth device
How to tellYou hear nothing but the call seems active
What fixes itSwitch to speaker or disconnect Bluetooth
6Do Not Disturb or battery restrictions
How to tellIncoming calls do not ring or arrive late
What fixes itAllow the app in Do Not Disturb and battery settings
7Old app or a faulty microphone
How to tellProblem in all apps that record sound
What fixes itUpdate the app; if every app fails, see the hardware section
How to fix it, step by step
Test your internet
Browse any page. If it stalls, try cellular instead of Wi-Fi, or reboot the router. Video needs a steady connection more than a fast one, so a flickering signal is worse than a slow but stable one.
Ask the other person to check theirs
If your connection is fine and a call still fails with only one contact, their phone or network may be the cause. Try calling someone else to confirm.
Allow microphone and camera permissions
Open Settings, Apps, WhatsApp, Permissions on Android, or the app's page in iPhone settings. Allow Microphone and Camera. Without them, the other person hears nothing or sees black.
Switch off the call data saver
In the app's settings, open the storage and data section and turn off the option that uses less data for calls. It can lower quality so much that a call fails on weak signal.
Check the sound output
During a call tap the speaker or audio button and choose the right output. If a Bluetooth earbud is connected somewhere nearby, the sound may go there. Disconnect it to test. See also phone speaker not working.
Allow background use and notifications
Remove battery restrictions for the app and allow it in Do Not Disturb so incoming calls ring. Check that notifications are on in the phone settings.
Install updates, then reboot
Install updates from the official store, then restart. This clears audio services that remain locked after a previous call.
Clear cache or reinstall with a backup
On Android clear the app cache first. Reinstall only after you have backed up your chats, because deleted chats can be lost otherwise.
WhatsApp voice message and voice note not working on Android
If the record button does not work or the note comes out silent, the cause is nearly always the microphone. Check permission first. Then close other apps that might be recording, such as a screen recorder or a call recorder. Hold the button firmly instead of tapping, and avoid covering the microphone hole with a case or finger.
You hold the mic button, the timer runs, but the person says the note was empty. Open another voice app and record a short clip. If that is silent too, the microphone has a problem and not the app.
WhatsApp video call not working: no sound or one way sound
| What happens | Likely reason | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot hear them | Volume low or wrong output | Raise call volume, pick speaker |
| They cannot hear you | Mic blocked or muted | Allow mic, tap unmute |
| Echo | Two phones close together | Move apart, use earphones |
| Robot voice | Poor network | Switch network |
A dirty or blocked microphone opening is common. Gently clean it with a dry soft brush. Never poke it with a pin.
When the problem is the phone hardware
If calls, voice notes, camera videos and other apps all have no sound or no picture, the fault is not WhatsApp. Read phone microphone not working and phone camera not working. A repair cost depends on whether the part is a simple connector or a board level fault, and water damage makes it higher. Opening the phone yourself can void the warranty.
Privacy and call safety
Do not accept video calls from unknown numbers and never share your six digit registration code, UPI PIN or OTP on a call. If someone asks you to share your screen to fix a problem, end the call.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my WhatsApp video call not working?
Common reasons are weak internet, blocked camera or microphone permission, data saver for calls, or a problem on the other person's phone. Check these in order.
Why does WhatsApp call connect but there is no sound?
The microphone may be blocked, the wrong audio output may be chosen, or a Bluetooth device may be taking the sound. Check permission and output.
Why is WhatsApp voice message not working on Android?
Microphone permission may be off for the app, or a different app may be holding the mic. Allow the permission and close other recording apps.
Why does WhatsApp calling not ring when someone calls me?
Do Not Disturb, notification settings or battery restrictions may be stopping it. Allow the app and keep it unrestricted.
Does WhatsApp voice recorder not working mean a broken microphone?
Not always. Test another voice recording app. If that also records silence, then the microphone itself needs a service check.
