WhatsApp not working can mean many things: messages stuck on a clock icon, no connection at the top, calls failing, status not loading, or the app closing by itself. The fix depends on which one you see, and on whether the problem is on your phone or on WhatsApp's own servers.

Do the outage check first, so you do not waste time resetting a healthy phone. Then follow the steps in order. The sections after them cover sound, notification, backup and business account problems that people search for most.

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Check if WhatsApp is down for everyone

Ask a friend on another network whether messages are sending for them. Look at WhatsApp's official status posts or its official social account. If many people are affected, there is nothing to fix on your side; wait and try again after some time.

  2. Test your internet with another app

Open a browser and load any page. If it loads slowly or not at all, fix the connection first using internet not working or mobile data not working. WhatsApp needs a working connection, and it also shows Connecting when a VPN or proxy blocks it.

  3. Restart the phone

Hold the power button and choose Restart. This clears a stuck network service and a frozen app, and it takes under a minute. Then open WhatsApp and wait for the Connecting label at the top to go away.

  4. Fix the date and time

Check the phone's Date and time page and enable the automatic options for both clock and time zone. WhatsApp checks the phone clock for security. A clock that is even a few minutes off the network time can block login.

  5. Update WhatsApp

Open your phone's app store, search for the app, and tap Update if it is shown. Old versions stop working after the company changes its servers. Keep your phone's own system updated too.

  6. Allow background data and battery use

On Android, open Settings, then Apps, then the app, and allow unrestricted battery use and background data. On iPhone, check Background App Refresh and Cellular Data for the app in Settings. This stops late or missing messages.

  7. Clear the app cache on Android

Go to Settings, Apps, WhatsApp, Storage, and choose Clear cache. Do not choose Clear data, because it can remove local chats that are not backed up. Cache removal only deletes temporary files and is safe.

  8. Free up phone storage

Check how much space is left in Settings, then Storage. Delete large videos, old downloads and unused apps. WhatsApp can freeze or fail to send media when less than a small amount of space remains.

  9. Reinstall only after backing up

As a last step, make sure your chat backup finished, then uninstall and reinstall the app. Use the same phone number to verify. Never share the six digit code that arrives by message with anyone.

Why WhatsApp not working hits you but not your friends

Because WhatsApp runs through the internet, a problem anywhere along the path can stop it: your phone, your Wi-Fi router, your mobile operator, or the company's servers. If friends can send and you cannot, the issue is on your side. If nobody can, it is a wider issue.

Your messages show one grey tick for an hour, while the same chat on a friend's phone shows nothing new. One tick means the message left your phone but did not reach theirs. Their phone may be off or offline, so it is not always your problem.

WhatsApp sound, notification and status problems

  • No notification sound: check the phone is not on silent, Do Not Disturb is off, and the chat is not muted.
  • Status sound not working: raise the media volume, since statuses play through it, and tap the speaker icon on the video.
  • Status not loading: weak data is the usual reason; also check that the contact has you saved and has not hidden the status from you.
  • Broadcast message not delivered: broadcast lists send only to people who have your number saved in their contacts.

Backup and business account issues

A backup that never finishes usually points to low storage, a poor connection or a full cloud storage account. Try on Wi-Fi with the phone plugged in.

For a business account, the same fixes apply. Also confirm the number is still active, since an inactive SIM breaks verification. If calls fail, see WhatsApp calls not working, and for the computer version use WhatsApp Web not working.

When to contact support

If you see a message that your account is banned or restricted, open the in-app help and request a review. Do not use third party or modified versions of the app, because they can lead to a ban and can steal your data.

WhatsApp will never ask for your six digit code or your PIN by call or message. If anyone does, it is a scam. For other app problems, browse the apps and websites guide.

Frequently asked questions

Why is WhatsApp not working today in India?

It may be a wider outage or a local network issue. Ask a friend on another network, check WhatsApp's official status posts, and test other apps on your own connection.

Why is WhatsApp not working on my phone but working on Wi-Fi?

Mobile data may be off, restricted for the app, or blocked by your plan or balance. Check data settings for WhatsApp and make sure the SIM has an active data pack.

What does the clock icon next to a message mean?

The message has not left your phone yet, usually because the connection is weak or off. It sends automatically once the internet returns.

Why is WhatsApp not working on iPhone but fine on Android?

On iPhone check Background App Refresh, Cellular Data for the app, and the iOS update. The same fixes for date, storage and connection apply to both.

Why is WhatsApp not working on Android after an update?

Clear the app cache, restart the phone and allow unrestricted battery use. If it still fails, update the phone system and the app again.

Will I lose chats if I reinstall WhatsApp?

Only if there is no backup. Take a fresh backup first, then restore it when you verify your number after reinstalling.
