When wifi calling not working is the complaint, it falls into two groups: either the Wi-Fi calling switch never appears in settings, or it appears but calls will not connect. The first group is about support. The second is about your Wi-Fi link or a setting that clashes with it.
Wi-Fi calling lets your phone place normal calls and texts over a Wi-Fi network when the mobile signal is weak at home. It only works when the phone model, the SIM provider and your plan all allow it, so the checks below start there before moving to the usual troubleshooting.

Find out if your SIM and phone support it
Look in your phone's call or SIM settings for a switch named Wi-Fi calling (some brands say Wi-Fi Calling or WLAN calling). If it is absent, either the phone, the provider or your plan does not support it. Ask the provider through the app or store. Do not keep reinstalling settings if the option never existed.
Update the phone software
Support for Wi-Fi calling often comes through system updates. Install any waiting update for the phone, and on iPhone also check for a carrier settings update, which arrives as a short prompt. Restart after the update.
Turn on VoLTE or 4G calling
On many phones, Wi-Fi calling depends on VoLTE. In the SIM settings, switch on VoLTE, HD calling or 4G calling, then try the Wi-Fi calling switch again.
Switch Wi-Fi calling off and on
Flip the Wi-Fi calling switch off, pause briefly, and flip it back on. Some phones show a small icon or the word Wi-Fi next to the operator name when it is active. If asked for an emergency address, enter the place where you will use it.
Check the Wi-Fi link itself
Open a website over the same Wi-Fi. If pages load slowly or stall, calls will suffer. Move nearer to the router and avoid walls. When the router turns out to be the weak spot, read WiFi not working.
Restart the router and try another Wi-Fi
Power the router off for a minute and on again. If calls work on a friend's network or a hotspot but not yours, your router settings or a firewall are the cause. Offices and hostels often block this type of traffic.
Check the SIM and the airplane toggle
Make sure the SIM works for normal calls on mobile signal. If not, read SIM card not working. Then toggle airplane mode, turn Wi-Fi back on, and re-enable Wi-Fi calling.
Clear network settings if all else fails
Run the network reset from the phone's reset menu. Saved Wi-Fi logins disappear with it, so write them down beforehand, and switch Wi-Fi calling on again once the phone restarts.
How Wi-Fi calling works, and why wifi calling not working is often a support issue
With Wi-Fi calling, voice and texts travel over your internet link to the provider, and then onto the normal phone network. You still dial from the same number. It helps in homes with poor mobile reach. It does not give you a new number, and it does not work without a working internet line. If the internet itself is down, calls cannot use it, which is why a router fault often looks like a phone fault.
Why wifi calling is not working in my phone
| Item | How to check | If missing |
|---|---|---|
| Phone | Look for the switch in call or SIM settings | Update the software; the model may not support it |
| Provider and plan | Ask in the provider's app or store | Cannot be fixed on the phone |
| Wi-Fi link | Open a web page and a video | Fix the router or move closer |
| VoLTE | See the 4G calling switch | Turn it on first |
Phone makers sell the same model with different software for different countries, so a feature seen in a video may not be on your unit.
VoLTE not working and the link to Wi-Fi calling
VoLTE carries your call over the 4G data network instead of the older voice network. If VoLTE is off, or the SIM was not provisioned for it, you may see calls drop, an HD voice icon missing, or Wi-Fi calling greyed out. Check that the SIM is the one set for 4G, and turn on the VoLTE switch. If VoLTE refuses to turn on, the provider may need to enable it for your number, and mobile data not working helps you check the rest of your mobile setup.
You switch on Wi-Fi calling at home and make a call, but it ends after a second. The Wi-Fi shows one bar. Move into the same room as the router and try again.
When it is the provider, not you
If the feature is missing on every phone with your SIM, or the provider's agent confirms it is not enabled for your plan or area, only they can change it. Ask clearly: is Wi-Fi calling enabled on my number, and does my plan include it. Do not follow steps that tell you to edit hidden settings or install special apps to unlock the feature.
Emergency calls on Wi-Fi calling use the address you register, so keep it correct. In a real emergency, a mobile signal call is more reliable when you have one.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my wifi calling not working?
The phone, SIM provider or plan may not support it, VoLTE may be off, or the Wi-Fi may be weak. Check the settings for the switch, update the phone and test on another Wi-Fi network.
Why is the Wi-Fi calling option missing from my phone?
It usually means the feature is not enabled for your phone model, software or SIM. Install updates, and ask your provider whether it is switched on for your number.
Does Wi-Fi calling need VoLTE?
On many phones, yes. VoLTE is often needed first, so turn on 4G calling in the SIM settings before enabling Wi-Fi calling.
Why does Wi-Fi calling work at a friend's house but not mine?
Your router, firewall or signal strength may be blocking or weakening the call traffic. Restart the router, move closer, and ask the network owner about blocked services.
Is Wi-Fi calling the same as calling on a messaging app?
No. Wi-Fi calling uses your regular phone number and the normal dialler. Apps use their own accounts and do not carry your usual number.
