Zoom not working is the problem that hits at the worst time: the meeting starts in two minutes, and the app will not join, your voice cannot be heard, the camera shows black, or an error with a number appears. Most of these are not big faults. They come from a few simple causes that you can check yourself.
Online meeting tools of every kind need a steady connection, permission to use the microphone and camera, and the right devices selected. A mistake in any of those gives a silent or frozen call. The steps here are ordered so that you can fix the common problems before the meeting begins. If the sound problem exists in every app, the guide to laptop sound not working may help, and for all other app trouble the apps and sites hub helps.
Common causes
1Unstable internet connection
How to tellFrozen video, robot voice, dropped meeting or error 5003 at joining
What fixes itMove closer to the router, close downloads, try mobile data
2Wrong microphone or speaker selected
How to tellOthers cannot hear you, or you hear nothing
What fixes itPick the right devices in the audio settings of the app
3Camera or microphone blocked by permissions
How to tellCamera not found, or microphone is greyed out
What fixes itAllow access in the system privacy settings
4Another app is using the camera
How to tellCamera works elsewhere but shows black here
What fixes itClose other apps that use the camera, then retry
5Outdated app

What fixes itInstall the latest version
6Network or office firewall blocking meetings
How to tellWorks on mobile data but fails on office or college Wi-Fi
What fixes itAsk the network admin or use another network
7Meeting rules set by the host
How to tellWaiting room, passcode request or sign-in required message
What fixes itCheck the invite details and ask the host
How to fix it, step by step
Test the connection first
Open a web page and a short video on the same network. If either is slow, restart the router, move closer, or switch your phone to mobile data. Ask others in the house to pause large downloads and videos.
Leave and rejoin the meeting
Close the meeting window and use the invite link again. If the app hangs, quit it fully. On Windows, end the task in Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
Check the microphone and speaker choice
In the app's audio settings, run the speaker and microphone test. Pick the device you actually use, for example the laptop microphone and not a Bluetooth headset that is switched off. See microphone not working on laptop if the test shows no input.
Allow camera and microphone permissions
On Windows open Settings, Privacy and security, Camera and Microphone. On a phone open the app's permission page. Make sure both are allowed for the app.
Close other apps that use the camera
On many computers a single program holds the camera while it runs. Close any other meeting tab, the camera app or a browser page that is using it. If the camera is still not found, read laptop camera not working.
Update the app and restart the device
Update from the official source or your phone's app store. A restart clears locked audio devices and freezes.
Try the browser version or another device
If the installed app fails, open the meeting link in a browser. Or use your phone for audio while the computer is repaired. This keeps you in the call while you fix the problem.
Turn off VPN and test another network
A VPN, proxy or strict office network can block meeting traffic. Disable the VPN and try your phone's hotspot.
Zoom not working on my phone: what to check
On a phone the usual causes are permissions, battery saving and a weak signal. Check that the app can use the microphone, camera and notifications. Turn off battery saver for the app so the call does not stop when the screen dims. Lastly, close other apps running in the background, since a phone with little memory will lag during video.
If calls over mobile data keep dropping, test the network using mobile data not working.
Zoom error code 5003 and error code 5
Numbered join errors in meeting apps generally mean the app could not connect to the service or the meeting. For 5003, the common reasons are an unstable or restricted network, a VPN, a firewall or an outdated app. Error 5 is less clear, and its meaning may vary, so use the same approach.
You click the invite and get Unable to connect, error code 5003. The same laptop on your phone hotspot joins fine. The office network is blocking the meeting, so ask the IT team or use the hotspot.
If the exact text in the message mentions a passcode, waiting room or host, then the issue is with the meeting rules and the host has to admit you.
Problems that appear in other meeting apps too
| Symptom | Where to look | Page to read |
|---|---|---|
| Others cannot hear you | Microphone selection, mute button | Microphone guide |
| You cannot hear others | Speaker choice, volume | Sound guide |
| Black video | Camera permission or another app | Camera guide |
| Lag and drops | Network | WiFi guide |
If you use a team collaboration app instead of this one, the same checks apply: sound devices, permissions, network and updates. Notification sounds also depend on system settings like Do Not Disturb and app notification permissions.
Prepare before an important meeting
- Join the test meeting option early to check audio and video.
- Keep your charger plugged in, since video drains the battery fast.
- Have a second device ready with the link.
- Close heavy apps and browser tabs.
Do not click meeting links that arrive from unknown people, and never type your password or OTP into a page opened from a message you did not expect.
Frequently asked questions
Zoom not working on a laptop, where do I start?
Check the internet, the audio and camera selection, privacy permissions and app version. A restart often clears a locked device.
Why is Zoom not working on my phone?
Usual reasons are missing permissions, a weak connection, battery saver or an old app. Allow the microphone and camera and update the app.
What is Zoom error code 5003?
It appears when the app cannot connect to the service. Network limits, a VPN, a firewall or an old app are the usual reasons. Try another network.
What does error code 5 in a Zoom meeting mean?
It points to a connection or join problem, though the exact reason may vary. Update the app, check the network and ask the host to confirm the meeting is open.
Why can people not hear me in Zoom?
You may be muted, the wrong microphone may be selected, or microphone access may be blocked. Run the audio test in the settings.
