A laptop camera not working shows up as a black screen, "We can't find your camera", or the video call app says no camera is available. People search it as "webcam not working" or "camera not working in laptop", and nearly all cases are settings, not broken lenses.
The built-in camera is a tiny USB device inside the lid, and Windows treats it like one. That gives us a clear order: check the physical shutter and key, check Windows permission, check which app is holding it, then fix the driver. Most readers are done by step four.

Look for a shutter or a camera key
Many laptops now have a sliding cover over the lens, or a key on the top row with a camera crossed out. Slide the cover aside and press that key once. A small light near the lens usually turns on when the camera starts.
Open the Camera app to test it
Press the Windows key, type Camera and press Enter. If your own face shows, the camera itself works and only the other app is at fault. If you see a message saying the camera cannot be found, carry on with the steps.
Allow camera access for apps
Go to Privacy and security in Settings and choose Camera. Turn on Camera access, then turn on "Let apps access your camera", and make sure the app you want is allowed. Windows 10 puts it under Privacy, then Camera, in Settings. Browsers need their own permission for each website, set from the lock icon next to the address.
Close apps that may hold the camera
Most laptops let just a single app have the camera at once. Close video call apps, screen recorders and extra browser tabs, then check Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc for anything still running. Open just the one app you need.
Restart the laptop
A restart releases a camera that an app froze on. Use Restart rather than Shut down. Then open the Camera app first, before any other program, to test.
Check Device Manager for the camera
Right-click the Start button, choose Device Manager, and look for Cameras or Imaging devices. If it is missing, choose Action, then Scan for hardware changes. If it shows a down arrow, right-click and choose Enable device.
Update, roll back or reinstall the driver
Right-click the camera, choose Update driver, then search automatically. If it broke after an update, open the Driver tab in Properties and press Roll Back Driver. As a last move, remove the device with Uninstall device, restart, and Windows sets up a new copy. Avoid downloading driver tools from random websites; pick drivers from the laptop maker's official support site, or let Windows Update supply one.
Run Windows Update and the camera troubleshooter
Install pending updates from Settings, then Windows Update. Then open the Get Help or Troubleshoot section in Settings and run the camera one if it is offered. A BIOS update from the maker's support page is a last software step, but follow the maker's instructions exactly and keep the charger plugged in.
Laptop camera not working: how to check it quickly
The quickest check is the Camera app: if it shows live video, the lens, cable and driver are all fine. A second test is a site that opens a camera preview in your browser, which also shows the browser permission. A third is the small light next to the lens, which lights when the camera is on. If the picture is black but the light is on, the lens is covered or a filter is blocking it. If the light never comes on, Windows is not starting the camera at all.
A meeting app says "Your camera is in use by another app". You close two browser tabs that had a video page open and the camera works again.
One app sees the camera and another does not
This is the most common surprise. It nearly always means a permission or a different app holding the camera. Check the app's own camera choice in its settings, because a laptop with a virtual camera or an extra device can pick the wrong one. In a browser, click the lock or camera icon near the address bar and set Camera to Allow. Reload the page after changing it. If a social app also complains, read the notes in apps and websites not working.
Windows 10 versus Windows 11 differences
The steps are the same on both, but the menu names differ. Windows 11 lists Privacy and security, while Windows 10 lists Privacy with a Camera page on the left. On older Windows 7 laptops there is no Camera app, so use the camera feature of your video call tool, and update the driver from the maker's site. If your Windows version no longer gets updates, driver support for new apps may be limited.
When the camera hardware has failed
If the camera is missing from Device Manager even after scanning, and also missing from the BIOS options, a loose or damaged cable behind the screen is likely, especially on a laptop that has been dropped or had its screen replaced. A technician opens the lid to reseat or change the camera module. Cost depends on whether the camera module can be bought alone or comes inside the screen assembly. A cheap workaround is an outside USB webcam, which also usually gives a clearer picture.
Opening the screen bezel can void the warranty. Ask the maker's authorised service first if the laptop is still covered.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my laptop camera not working in Windows 10?
Most often because camera access is off in Privacy settings, another app is using the camera, or the driver crashed. Open the Camera app first to learn whether the hardware responds.
Why is my webcam showing a black screen?
Check for a closed shutter or a camera key that switched it off. Then close other apps that might hold the camera and allow camera access in Settings.
How do I fix a camera that is missing from Device Manager?
Use Scan for hardware changes, check that it is not disabled in the BIOS, and run Windows Update. If it is still absent, a cable or camera module fault is likely and needs a technician.
Does a laptop camera need a driver?
Windows includes a basic driver, so it normally works without any download. Problems appear after updates, and then rolling back or reinstalling through Device Manager usually fixes it.
Can someone use my laptop camera without my knowledge?
The camera light normally turns on when it is in use. To stay safe, keep Windows updated, only allow camera access to apps you trust, and use the shutter when you are not on a call.
