Windows search not working can look like three different faults: the search bar will not open or will not let you type, it opens but shows a blank white panel, or it opens and finds nothing even for files you know exist. All three come from the same small group of causes, namely a stuck Windows process, a switched off service, or a search index that has gone wrong.
The fixes below go from the quick restart to the deeper index rebuild, and they apply to both Windows 10 and 11. When the Start button is also dead, read Windows key not working alongside this page, and if the whole bottom bar is frozen, see taskbar not working.
Common causes
1Search or Explorer process is stuck

2Windows Search service is stopped

3Search index is damaged or incomplete
How to tellApps appear but your files and folders are missing

4Update left search components broken
How to tellProblem started right after a Windows update
What fixes itInstall newer updates, then run DISM and SFC
5Web results blocked or no internet
How to tellSearch shows a spinner or the web part is empty
What fixes itCheck connection; local file search still works offline
6Disk is full or very slow
How to tellWhole PC lags and searching takes minutes
What fixes itFree space and check disk health
7Search inside a mail program only
How to tellWindows search works, but mail search finds nothing
What fixes itRebuild the search index for the mail app's data location
How to fix it, step by step
Restart the PC once, properly
Choose Restart, not Shut down. Fast startup can keep a broken search process alive across shutdowns, while restart reloads it fully.
Reload the Windows shell
Open Task Manager, locate the Explorer entry and restart it from the right click menu. When the taskbar reappears, click in the search box and type a word to test.
Run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter
In Settings, open the System page, choose Troubleshoot, then Other troubleshooters, and start the Search and Indexing one. Pick the symptom that fits, such as files missing from results. The older Windows 10 layout hides it inside Update and Security.
Make sure the search service is running
Press Win + R to bring up Run, enter
services.msc, then scroll to the Windows Search entry and double click it. Set its Startup type to Automatic and click Start if it shows as stopped. Apply and close.Rebuild the search index
Open Start, type Indexing Options and open it. Click Advanced, then Rebuild. It may take from a few minutes to an hour, and results are partial until it finishes. Leave the PC plugged in.
Check which folders are indexed
In the same Indexing Options window, make sure your documents, desktop or other folders appear in the list. Click Modify to add the missing ones. Files in folders that are not indexed will not show up in the quick search.
Install updates and repair system files
Look in Windows Update for waiting items. After that, in an admin Command Prompt, use
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand thensfc /scannow. See also Windows update error if updates keep failing.Create a test user account
Add a local user in Settings, sign in to it and try searching. If search works there, your original profile has damaged search data. Move your files to the new account only after you have copied them to a safe place.
Windows 11 search bar not working versus Windows 10
The two versions share most of the engine. Windows 11 has its search panel tightly tied to the taskbar, so a taskbar glitch often kills the search box too. Windows 10 has a separate search box that can be hidden by a taskbar setting. If you cannot find the box, right click an empty part of the taskbar and look at the search option in the taskbar settings, which lets you show it as an icon or a full box.
Windows search not working: how to tell where the fault sits
| What you see | Likely fault | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Cannot type in the search box | Stuck shell process | Restart Explorer |
| Blank white panel | Web part or process problem | Restart Explorer, check internet |
| Apps found, files not | Index problem | Rebuild the index |
| Nothing found at all | Service stopped | Start Windows Search service |
| Only slow | Index still building, or full disk | Wait, free space |
Mail search not working in Windows 11
Searching inside your mail program uses its own index, so the main Windows search can work while mail search stays empty. Make sure the mail app's data location is ticked in Indexing Options and rebuild. Also confirm that the mailbox has finished syncing, because messages not yet downloaded cannot be found. Where only recent mail is missing, give it time after a rebuild.
You type a sender's name in the mail search and see We didn't find anything, yet the mail is in the inbox. This usually points to an incomplete index, not to lost mail.
When it keeps coming back
If the index breaks again within days, suspect a failing drive or a full one. A shop can check the health of the drive. If the repair does not stick, a repair install of Windows keeps your files and apps, but back up before trying it. Never use downloaded fixer tools or registry cleaners; they cause more problems than they remove.
While the index rebuilds, the fan may spin and the PC may feel slow. That is normal and ends by itself.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Windows 11 search bar not working?
Usually a stuck Explorer process, a stopped Windows Search service or a damaged index is behind it. Restart Explorer first, then check the service and rebuild the index.
How do I rebuild the search index?
Open Indexing Options from the Start menu, click Advanced and press Rebuild. Wait until it says indexing is complete.
Why does Windows search show no results for files I know are there?
The folder may not be included in the index, or the index is damaged. Add the folder with Modify, or rebuild the index.
Does the search bar need internet to work?
No. Local apps, settings and files are searched offline. Web suggestions need internet, and a slow connection can make the panel look blank.
Is search not working in Windows 10 caused by a virus?
Rarely. A stuck process, a stopped service or index trouble is far more likely. A scan with Windows Security is a safe check.
