A taskbar not working (or a task bar not working, as many people type it) can look like several things: icons that will not respond, a Start button that does nothing, a clock that is frozen, a search box that stays blank, or a bar that vanishes completely. The good part is that the taskbar is part of one Windows process, so most of these have a common fix.
The taskbar and Start menu are drawn by Windows Explorer. When Explorer hangs after an update, a crashed shell component or a damaged system file, everything it draws freezes with it. The steps below go from a five-second restart of that process to deeper repair, so stop as soon as your taskbar behaves again.
Common causes
1Windows Explorer process hung

What fixes itRestart Windows Explorer from Task Manager
2Recent Windows update with a bug
How to tellProblem began right after an update or restart
What fixes itInstall newer updates, or uninstall the latest update from Update history
3Damaged system files

What fixes itRun SFC and then DISM repair commands
4A misbehaving startup app
How to tellTaskbar freezes a minute after sign-in
What fixes itDisable startup apps in Task Manager one group at a time
5Corrupt user profile settings

What fixes itCreate a new local user and move your files across
6Graphics driver or display glitch
How to tellTaskbar is half drawn, flickers, or sits on the wrong monitor
What fixes itUpdate or roll back the display driver and check display settings
7Taskbar hidden by a setting
How to tellBar appears only when the mouse touches the screen edge
What fixes itTurn off automatically hide the taskbar in settings
How to fix it, step by step
Open Task Manager with a keyboard shortcut
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc. If the mouse is not working on the taskbar, this still works, as it does not depend on it. Choose More details if the window looks small.
Restart Windows Explorer
Scroll the Processes list to Windows Explorer, select it, and press the Restart task button at the bottom right. The screen blinks briefly while the taskbar reloads. This single move cures most frozen bars.
Restart the computer properly
Choose Restart from the power menu instead of Shut down. A restart reloads Windows fully, while shutdown with Fast Startup can save a faulty state and bring it back.
Check for pending Windows updates
Open Settings with Windows + I, go to Windows Update and install what is waiting. Taskbar bugs are often fixed in the monthly Windows updates, and a pending restart alone can cause odd behaviour.
Repair system files with SFC
Find Command Prompt in the Start menu and start it with administrator rights. Enter
sfc /scannowand let the scan run to 100 percent. It swaps damaged protected files for good copies when it can.Run DISM to repair the Windows image
In that same administrator window, enter
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthnext. It needs the internet and can take a while. Restart afterwards and runsfc /scannowonce more.Try startup apps off
In Task Manager, open the Startup apps tab and disable items you do not recognise, starting with the ones marked High impact. Restart and see if the taskbar stays stable. Turn items back on one at a time to find the culprit.
Test with a new user account
Go to Settings, then Accounts, then Other users, and add a new local user. Sign in with it. If the taskbar works there, your original profile settings are damaged, and moving your files over is cleaner than endless repair.
Use System Restore
Search for Create a restore point, open System Restore, and choose a point from before the problem started. Your documents stay, but apps installed after that point may be removed.
Windows 10 taskbar not working vs Windows 11
The first fixes are the same on both versions. The differences appear in the settings. In Windows 11, taskbar options are under Settings, then Personalisation, then Taskbar. In Windows 10, right click the taskbar and open Taskbar settings. Windows 11 also lost a few older features, such as moving the bar to the sides of the screen, so a missing option is sometimes simply not there on that version.
You click the Start button and nothing opens, though the apps already running still work. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, reload Windows Explorer, and test again. If it opens, the shell was hung and you do not need further repair.
Taskbar search not working
If only the search box fails, the search service may be stuck. See our page on Windows search not working for index and service steps. If the Windows key itself is dead, check Windows key not working, since the keyboard may be the real cause.
When only some taskbar icons misbehave
| Symptom | First fix |
|---|---|
| Whole bar frozen | Restart Windows Explorer |
| Icons are blank or white | Restart Explorer, then repair with SFC |
| Clock or volume icon unresponsive | Restart Explorer, then check updates |
| Bar missing after connecting a monitor | Check display settings and set the main display |
| Bar appears and disappears | Turn off auto hide in taskbar settings |
If the taskbar problem comes with crashes and a blue screen, read about the blue screen error and about Windows Update errors, since a failed update is a frequent trigger.
Keeping the taskbar stable
Keep Windows updated, avoid tools that change the look of the taskbar, and limit the number of programs that start with the computer. Restart your PC at least once a week, and keep a few gigabytes of free disk space, because low storage makes Explorer slow and fragile.
Be careful with online tips that tell you to edit the registry or run scripts from unknown pages. Stay with the built-in tools in this guide, and take a restore point before bigger changes.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my taskbar not working in Windows 10?
The most likely cause is a hung Windows Explorer process. Restart it in Task Manager. If the problem keeps coming back, install updates and run SFC and DISM to repair system files.
How do I fix the taskbar not working in Windows 11?
Restart Windows Explorer, then restart the PC and install pending updates. If the bar is still stuck, run the SFC and DISM commands, disable startup apps, and test a new user account.
Why is my taskbar frozen but the mouse works?
The mouse is handled by Windows itself, while the taskbar is drawn by Explorer. When Explorer hangs, only that part freezes. Restarting it brings the bar back.
Will fixing the taskbar delete my files?
No. Restarting Explorer, SFC, DISM and System Restore do not remove your documents or photos. Creating a new user account leaves the old profile where it is.
My taskbar search is not working, what should I do?
Reload Explorer first, then look at the search service and indexing options. A missing search result list can also come from a pending update.
