Hitachi AC Error Code List: Blinks, Letters and Safe Checks

Quick answer Hitachi shows faults as display codes or blinking light counts that change by model. Note the code, try a safe reset, and confirm the meaning in the model table.

This site is not affiliated with Hitachi; this is an independent explanation.

A Hitachi AC error code list is not one list. Hitachi sells window ACs, split and inverter ACs, ductable and cassette units and VRF systems, and each family has its own table. Some show a letter and number on a display, others show a count of blinks on the lamps, such as a light that flashes seven times, pauses and repeats.

So the useful skill is reading your own unit correctly: write down what you see, find the table for your exact model in the manual or on the label inside the front panel, and then try only the safe checks. Resets, filters and clear airflow are for you. Gas, boards, wiring, the outdoor unit and the compressor are for an authorised technician. Do not trust a code list copied from a different model type.

Common causes

What fixes itBreaker off with the AC stopped, ten minutes, then one restart

  • 2Dirty filter or coil restricting airflow

How to tellWeak airflow, long running times and filters not washed in ages

  • 3Sensor or thermistor fault

What fixes itCheck the outdoor switch; service for the wiring and boards

  • 5Outdoor fan or compressor protection

What fixes itClear space around the unit; technician for fan and compressor tests

  • 6Display or control board fault

How to tellDisplay dead or lights blink wrongly while the unit still tries to run

What fixes itAuthorised service tests the display and the control board

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Record the code exactly

If there is a display, note the letters and numbers. If there are lamps, count the blinks in one full sequence, then the pause, and count again to be sure. Take a short video on your phone for the technician.

  2. Find your model type and table

The model name appears on the sticker of the indoor half and in the booklet. Decide whether yours is a window AC, split or cassette first, since tables do not carry across.

  3. Do a full power reset

Press off on the remote and drop the breaker feeding the AC. Give it ten minutes, then raise it and ask for cool at a moderate setting. If the code stays away, it was a glitch.

  4. Wash the filters

Lift the front panel, take out the mesh, rinse it under the tap, let it dry out of direct sun and push it back. Keep the space in front of the vents open.

  5. Peek at the outdoor isolator and grille

Look at the isolator switch and the grille from a distance. Both should be clear and on. The cover, the fan and every wire are off limits.

  6. Test the remote and the display setting

Replace the remote batteries. If the display is dark but the AC works, check the display or light button on the remote. A display that stays dark with the AC dead points to power or a board fault.

  7. Call authorised service for a repeating code

Give the model, the code or blink count and the time it began. Stop restarting after two tries, because repeated starts can stress the compressor.

How to read a Hitachi AC error code list

On units with lamps, a code is a number of blinks in a row, then a gap. Seven blinks and nine blinks are searched often, but the meaning of a count depends on the model family, so the same count may not mean the same thing on a window unit and a split. On units with a display, the letters can be a sensor, a fan, a communication or a protection alert.

The white light blinks seven times, pauses, and repeats, and the AC will not cool. Count it again to be sure. Then look up seven blinks in the table for your model, not in a general list, and restart once from the MCB.

Window, split, cassette and VRF units

What changes between Hitachi unit types
Unit typeHow faults usually showWho should handle it
Window ACLetters or blinks, often sensor or protectionYou for resets; service for the rest
Split and inverter ACDisplay letters or lamp blinks, may include the outdoor sideAuthorised technician
Cassette and ductableCode on the unit or a wall controllerTechnician or installer
VRF systemsNumbered codes on a controller, many rooms may show alertsInstaller or authorised service only

VRF documents often list the codes in a PDF. Use the one from the installer for your system and do not rely on a general list, including a Hitachi VRF error code list PDF found online. Window AC codes such as FC or CE are only meaningful with the window AC table in hand.

Hitachi AC display not working or not cooling

A dark display does not always mean a dead AC. Press the display or light button on the remote first. If the AC cools but the lamps stay dark, it is usually a setting or a minor panel fault. If the AC is dead as well, check the plug, breaker and stabiliser. For poor cooling and no code, read AC not working, and if the outdoor part is silent, AC compressor not working.

Safety and warranty

Never open the outdoor casing, touch boards, add gas or bypass a sensor to clear a code. It is unsafe, may end your cover and can wreck the compressor. Under warranty, start with Hitachi authorised service.

Other brands and wider help

If your AC is a different brand, find it on the AC error codes hub. Remember that tables are not shared between brands, so never use another make's list for this one.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get the Hitachi error code list for my AC?

Check the manual for your exact model, the label inside the front panel, or ask Hitachi authorised service with the model number. For VRF, ask the installer for the system document.

What does seven times blinking mean on a Hitachi AC?

What a blink count means depends on the model family. Count carefully, find it in the table for your unit, restart once, and call service if it comes back.

Why is my Hitachi AC display not working?

Try the display button on the remote, then check power. A display that stays dark with a working AC is usually a setting or panel issue, and a dead AC points to power or the board.

Can I clear a Hitachi error code myself?

Resetting the power and washing the filters is your limit. If the code returns the fault is real and a technician should handle it. Leave both units closed.

Does a Hitachi window AC use the same codes as a split AC?

Not necessarily. Window, split, cassette and VRF units each have a table of their own, so work from the one for your type, whether you searched for a Hitachi split AC error code list, an inverter AC list or a ductable AC list.
