This site is not affiliated with Google Maps; this is an independent explanation.
Google Maps not working can mean the map stays grey, the blue dot is in the wrong street, directions never start, the voice is silent, or the whole app closes. Because Maps depends on GPS, mobile data and the app itself, one weak link is enough to spoil the trip.
I have sorted these problems on hundreds of phones, and in most of them the app is fine. The usual culprits are location settings, a phone that cannot see enough satellites indoors, a blocked data connection, or battery saving that puts the app to sleep. The steps below go from the fastest to the deeper ones. If GPS fails in every app, read the part about hardware at the end.
Common causes
1Location is off or set to low accuracy
How to tellBlue dot missing, or the phone asks to turn on location
What fixes itTurn on location and choose the high accuracy mode
2Weak GPS signal indoors or between tall buildings
How to tellDot jumps or drifts, accuracy circle is large
What fixes itGo outdoors with open sky and wait a minute
3No mobile data or poor connection
How to tellMap tiles stay blank or the route cannot be calculated
What fixes itCheck data, or download an offline area before travelling
4Battery saver limits the app
How to tellNavigation stops when the screen locks
What fixes itSet battery use for the app to unrestricted
5Outdated app or full cache
How to tellApp freezes, crashes or shows odd map pieces
What fixes itInstall the latest version, then empty the cache
6Compass needs calibration
How to tellDot points the wrong way even when the position is right
What fixes itMove the phone in a figure of eight
7Phone case or hardware fault
How to tellGPS fails in all apps even outdoors
What fixes itRemove thick or metal case; visit a service centre
How to fix it, step by step
Turn location on and pick high accuracy
Open quick settings and turn on Location. On Android, go to location settings and choose the mode that uses GPS plus Wi-Fi and mobile networks if it is offered. On an iPhone use Settings, Privacy and Security, Location Services and set Maps to While Using the App, with Precise Location on.
Step outside and wait for a fix
GPS works best with a clear view of the sky. Stand outdoors for a minute before judging the result. Inside a basement or a car with a metal roof, the position may be poor.
Calibrate the compass
Open the app, tap the blue dot and choose the calibrate option if you see it. Then wave the phone in a figure of eight a few times. This fixes a dot that faces the wrong way.
Check mobile data or Wi-Fi
The map needs the internet unless you saved an offline area. Open a web page to test. See mobile data not working if pages do not open.
Let the app keep working in the background
Open the app info page and, in battery settings, remove restrictions for it. Without this, the phone may stop navigation as soon as the screen turns off.
Update the app and the system
Install updates from your official app store and the phone's software update menu. If the app will not update, check apps not working. Map and location fixes often arrive in these updates.
Clear the cache
On Android choose Settings, Apps, Maps, Storage, Clear cache. This removes damaged map pieces and does not delete saved places on your account.
Restart the phone and toggle airplane mode
Restart, or flip airplane mode on for a short ten second break, then off. The phone then hunts for satellites from scratch.
Google Maps not working properly: matching symptom to fix
| Symptom | Most likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Blue dot missing | Location off or no permission | Turn on location |
| Dot in the wrong place | Weak signal or no calibration | Go outside, calibrate |
| Grey map | No data | Check connection, use offline map |
| No voice guidance | Volume, mute or Bluetooth routing | Check navigation volume |
| Stops when screen locks | Battery limits | Allow background use |
How to fix GPS not working on the whole phone
If other apps also show the wrong position, the problem is the phone and not Maps. Try these in order: restart, turn location off and on, remove a thick or magnetic case, and step outdoors. A recent screen protector or a drop can also affect the antenna. If nothing helps, the phone may have a faulty GPS part or a software fault, which a service centre can check. A repair costs more when the fault is on the board than when a software reset fixes it.
More general phone checks are in phone not working.
Location not working on the map after a trip or a move
Sometimes the app shows your old city or a saved home address instead of where you stand. Tap the location button once to recentre, close other location apps, and then reopen the app. If you use a VPN, switch it off, since it can confuse place guesses based on the network.
You open the app inside a mall and see a blue circle that covers three streets. That wide circle shows the phone is guessing. Walk outside and the circle shrinks as the satellites are found.
Offline maps and voice guidance
- Before a trip to a place with weak coverage, download the area in the app's offline maps section while you have a good connection.
- If directions are silent, raise the media or navigation volume, check that guidance is not muted, and disconnect a Bluetooth speaker you are not using.
- Keep the phone charged and shaded, since heat makes the phone lower its performance.
Always look at the road signs as well. Map data can be old or wrong, and a driver should never rely on a phone while moving.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Google Maps not working on my phone?
Check location settings, data and the app version first. Weak GPS indoors, battery saver and a full cache are the other common reasons.
How to fix GPS not working?
Turn location on with high accuracy, go outdoors, restart the phone and remove a thick case. If every app shows the wrong position, the phone may need a service check.
Why is my Google Map not working properly while driving?
Navigation can stop because of battery restrictions, a lost signal in tunnels or a blocked data connection. Allow background use and download offline maps before long routes.
Why is the blue dot not showing in Google Maps?
Location may be off, the app may have no permission, or the phone cannot get a fix. Grant permission and wait outdoors for a minute.
Does Google Maps work without internet?
It can, if you saved an offline area earlier. Live traffic and new searches still need a connection.
