The 201 error code is really good news with a worrying label. It means Created: the server took your request and made something new, such as a user account, an order, a comment or an uploaded file. Any code that begins with 2 is a success.
You might still search for it because an app printed "error code 201", a testing tool showed it in red, or a form seemed to freeze right after you pressed submit. The sections below tell you how to confirm the item really exists, what to do when it does not, and how developers should use 201 well.
Common causes
1A new item was created normally
How to tellThe thing you submitted now appears in the list
What fixes itNothing to fix; refresh to see the new item
2Page did not update after creation
How to tell201 appears but the screen looks the same
What fixes itReload the page or reopen the app
3Pressing submit twice
How to tellTwo copies of the same order, post or entry exist
What fixes itDelete the duplicate and wait for the first reply next time
4App shows the number as an error text
How to tellA message says error 201 although the task finished
What fixes itCheck whether the action worked; report the wording to the app
5Script or tool treats only 200 as success
How to tellA developer's test fails on 201
What fixes itAccept any 2xx code as success in the check
6Stale saved copy in the browser
How to tellOthers see your new item and you do not
What fixes itHard reload or use a private window
How to fix it, step by step
Look for the new item first
Before you fix anything, check whether the item exists: the new account, the posted comment, the uploaded file. If it is there, the 201 error code did its job and you are done.
Refresh the page or reopen the app
Some screens do not redraw by themselves after creating something. On a computer press F5. On a phone, pull the screen down, or quit the app and start it again.
Check for duplicates
If the screen seemed stuck, you may have pressed submit twice. Look for two copies and remove the extra one. For orders or payments, check the confirmation message or email before trying a third time.
Compare with another device
Open the same account on another phone or computer. If the item appears there, the first device only needs a refresh or a cleared cache.
Use a private window to rule out saved data
Try the address in an incognito tab. An old stored page can keep the new item hidden for a while.
Note the exact wording and time
If the item is truly missing, write down the message, the time and what you submitted, and send these to the site's support. A missing item after a 201 points to a fault on their side.
Developers: accept every 2xx result
If your test or script breaks on 201, change the check to treat any number from 200 to 299 as success. Then read the response for the new item's address.
What the 201 error code means in plain words
When a request makes something new on the server, the polite reply is 201. The rules say the answer should also point to the new thing, usually through a Location header with its address, and may include a short body describing it. It is the server's receipt.
A sign up form posts your details, the tool log shows POST /users 201, and the next page says welcome. The account now exists.
Error code 201 in apps and logs
Some apps show the bare number inside a pop up, which scares people. Usually the app developer printed the status without a friendly sentence. Treat it like a receipt, then check the result. If the same app shows 201 and also fails to show your data, that is an app bug, so update the app or contact its support. For wider app trouble, open apps and websites not working.
201 compared with other 2xx codes
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| 200 | Request worked and data is returned |
| 201 | Something new was created |
| 202 | Accepted, the work will finish later |
| 204 | Worked, nothing to return |
See 200 OK and 204 No Content for the neighbours, and 409 Conflict for what a server says when the item already exists.
Good practice for builders
- Return 201 only for creation, not for updates.
- Include the new item's address in the
Locationheader. - Protect against double submits by disabling the button after the first press.
- Show friendly words to users, such as your account is ready, instead of the number.

Frequently asked questions
Is the 201 error code a real error?
No. It is a success. The server created a new item such as an account or a post, and reported that back to you.
What does error code 201 mean in an app?
Usually the app printed the raw status after creating something. Check whether the item exists. If it does, ignore the number.
Why did I get a 201 but nothing changed on screen?
The page may not have refreshed. Reload it, or reopen the app. If still nothing, tell support the time and what you submitted.
How does 200 differ from 201?
A 200 says the request worked. A 201 says the same and adds that a new item was made.
Should a 201 ever be retried?
Not blindly. Retrying a create request can make a second copy. Check first if the item is already there.
