409 Error Code: What a Conflict Response Means

Quick answer A 409 means the server understood you but your request clashes with what is already stored, such as a duplicate entry or a newer edit. Refresh and retry, or fix the data.

The 409 error code is the HTTP status called Conflict. It tells you the server understood your request and the request itself is well formed, but carrying it out would clash with the current state of the thing you are changing. Think of two people trying to book the same seat, or two people saving the same document at once.

Unlike a 5xx error, nothing is broken on the server. The 4xx family says the request needs to change, and a 409 hints that the person or program sending it can resolve the clash and try again. You may see it as "409 Conflict", "HTTP error code 409" or a plain message such as "already exists" inside a form or an app.

Common causes

What fixes itUse a different value, or sign in or edit the existing record instead

  • 2Two edits to the same item at once

  • 3Stale data in your open tab

What fixes itComplete the earlier step first, or empty the item and retry

  • 5Version or ETag mismatch in an API call

What fixes itFetch the current version, merge changes and resend with the new value

  • 6Duplicate submission after a slow response

How to tellYou tapped submit twice and the second try shows 409

What fixes itCheck whether the first one went through before submitting again

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Read the message on the page

A good site explains the clash in words, for example that a username is taken or that someone else changed the record. That sentence tells you more than the number does, so act on it first.

  2. Check if your first try already worked

If you tapped submit twice, the first attempt may have succeeded and the second returned 409. Open your orders, profile or list and look before trying again, so you do not create a duplicate.

  3. Refresh the page and repeat the action

Press F5 on a desktop, or tap the refresh icon in a phone browser, to load the newest data. Then redo your change on top of it. This solves most edit collisions in a shared document or form.

  4. Change the value that clashes

If the error appears on a sign-up, pick another username, email or code. If you think the old record is yours, use the sign in or forgot password option instead of creating a new one.

  5. Finish the step the site is waiting for

Some actions are blocked until something else is done first, such as removing items inside a folder before deleting it. Look for the related item and clear it.

  6. Try in a private window

An old saved page can keep sending outdated information. Open a private tab, sign in and repeat the action. If it works there, clear the site's cache and cookies in your normal browser.

  7. Contact the site if it keeps happening

If you get a 409 on a plain action with nothing to clash with, send the owner a screenshot with the time. They can look in their logs and find the record causing it.

What does the 409 error code mean for a developer?

The official meaning is that the request could not be completed because of a conflict with the current state of the target resource. The server should say enough in the response body for the sender to find and fix the source of the clash. Common triggers in a REST API are creating an object with a key that must be unique, changing an object that has a newer version, and moving an object into a state it cannot be in.

The 409 error code in a REST API is also the usual way to report optimistic locking failures: the client sends the version it last saw, the server notices that it is out of date and refuses.

CodeBest fit
400The request itself is malformed
405The method is not allowed on that address
409Request is valid but clashes with current state
422Request is readable but its content fails validation

How developers avoid and handle a 409

  • Return a clear body that names the field or item in conflict, and where possible the current value.
  • Use version numbers or ETags so clients can detect stale updates cleanly.
  • Make creates safe to repeat with an idempotency key so a double tap does not make two records.
  • Let the client retry only after it reloads the latest state; blind retries just repeat the same clash.

A real moment where you see a 409

You edit a shared price list on your phone while a colleague saves a change on a laptop. When you press save, the page shows 409 Conflict: the record was changed by someone else. Nothing is lost. Refresh to see their change, add yours again and save.

Before you refresh, copy any long text you typed, in case the page clears the form.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 409 error code?

Conflict is the name of this HTTP status. It says your request is valid but cannot be done because it clashes with the current state of the item, such as a duplicate or an outdated edit.

Is the HTTP 409 error code my fault or the server's?

Neither, in most cases. The server is working correctly and is protecting data from a clash. You usually fix it by refreshing, changing a value or finishing another step.

What does error code 409 mean in a REST API?

It means the API refused a create or update because the target is in a state that does not allow it, for example a duplicate key or an outdated version. The client should read the response body, fix the conflict and resend.

How do I fix a 409 when signing up for something?

Your email, phone number or username is probably already registered. Try signing in or using the forgot password option rather than creating a second account.

Does a 409 hurt a website's search ranking?

Not normally, because it appears on actions like saving or creating, not on pages that search engines visit.
