Two Finger Scroll Not Working: Get Touchpad Gestures Back

Quick answer If the pointer moves but sliding two fingers does nothing, the scroll gesture is off or its driver is missing. Turn it on in Touchpad settings, then update the driver.

Two finger scroll not working is a narrow fault: you can still move the pointer and click, but placing two fingers on the pad and sliding them up or down does not scroll the page. Some people notice that other gestures, such as pinch to zoom and three finger swipes, are also dead.

This is a narrower fault than a dead pad. The sensor is working, so the problem is almost always one switch in Windows, or a missing precision driver that provides gestures. Check these in order. If the pointer itself is not responding, use touchpad not working first.

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Try the gesture on a long web page

Open a long page, put two fingers lightly on the middle of the pad and slide up and down. Use light touch, since pressing hard can register as a click. If it works here but not elsewhere, the problem is the other app and not the pad.

  2. Open Touchpad settings

Press the Windows key, type touchpad and press Enter. On Windows 11, expand the Scroll and zoom section. On Windows 10, look for Scroll and zoom as well. Make sure the Touchpad toggle itself is On.

  3. Tick the two finger scroll option

Tick "Drag two fingers to scroll" and also check the scrolling direction choice, which can be set to Down motion scrolls up or Down motion scrolls down. If the direction feels reversed, that is the setting to change.

  4. Turn on Pinch to zoom and test gestures

In the same section, tick Pinch to zoom, then test it in a picture. If gestures work after you save, the problem was only a setting. If the whole Scroll and zoom section is missing, move to the driver steps.

  5. Restart the laptop

Restart and test again before you change anything else. Gesture drivers can fail to load after sleep, and a fresh start loads them again.

  6. Update the touchpad driver

Right-click Start and choose Device Manager. Under "Mice and other pointing devices" and "Human Interface Devices", look for the touchpad entry. Open its context menu, pick Update driver and let Windows search. Also run Windows Update, since many gestures come through optional driver updates there.

  7. Roll back, or remove and reinstall

If scroll died after an update, open the touchpad entry, open Properties and its Driver tab for Roll Back Driver. Otherwise pick Uninstall device, restart, and Windows will fit a new copy. Avoid downloading gesture tools from unknown websites.

  8. Test with a mouse and check the BIOS

A USB mouse proves the rest of the system is fine; see mouse scroll not working if the wheel also fails. Some laptops have a touchpad mode in the BIOS, usually Advanced or Basic. Advanced allows gestures, while Basic does not, so check it if you are comfortable with BIOS menus.

Why two finger scroll not working happens after a driver change

Windows has a built-in basic driver that moves the pointer and clicks. Gesture features come from a more capable driver, either the Windows precision touchpad driver or the one supplied by the laptop maker. If an update swaps the capable driver for the basic one, gestures vanish while the pointer still works. This is why the fault often follows an update, and why a rollback or a fresh install of the driver is the usual cure.

You update Windows, restart, and two finger scroll stops. The Touchpad settings page used to list Scroll and zoom, and now shows only a toggle. That tells you the gesture driver is gone and needs reinstalling.

Differences between Windows 10, Windows 11 and Mac laptops

On Windows 10 the Touchpad page lives under Devices, while Windows 11 places it under Bluetooth and devices. Both have the same Scroll and zoom choices. Older Windows 7 laptops depend on the maker's pointing device software in Control Panel, under Mouse, Device Settings. A Mac laptop uses System Settings, then Trackpad, then Scroll and Zoom, where "Scroll direction: Natural" can feel reversed to Windows users.

When two finger scroll is dead after you try everything

If the scroll option is ticked, the driver is fresh and the gesture is still dead, test whether the pad registers any touch at all in the BIOS. If clicks and pointer work but multi-finger touch does not, the pad itself may be partly faulty, for example after liquid or pressure from a swollen battery. A technician can test and replace the pad. Repair cost depends on whether the pad can be bought alone or only with the palm rest. A USB mouse works as a stand-in, and the keyboard keys Page Up and Page Down scroll pages. For the wider set of faults, use laptop not working.

A swollen battery lifts the pad or the case and is a fire risk. If your laptop is rocking on a flat table, stop using it on charge and see a service centre.

Frequently asked questions

Why is two finger scroll not working in Windows 11?

The scroll gesture may be unticked, or the precision driver may be missing after an update. Check Settings, then Bluetooth and devices, then Touchpad, then update the driver.

How do I enable two finger scrolling on Windows 10?

Open Settings, then Devices, then Touchpad, and tick Drag two fingers to scroll in the Scroll and zoom section.

Why does touchpad scroll fail in just one program?

The program may lack smooth scrolling support. Update it, try a different browser window, or scroll with the keyboard.

Why are my touchpad gestures not working after an update?

The update may have replaced the full gesture driver with a basic one. Roll back or reinstall the touchpad driver, then restart.

Can a cleaning cloth fix a scroll problem?

Sometimes. Greasy or damp pads confuse multi-finger touch, so wipe the pad with a dry soft cloth and try again with clean, dry fingers.
