Timeout Error Code: What a Request Timed Out Means

Quick answer A timeout error code means one side waited too long for a reply and gave up. Check your connection and retry; repeated timeouts usually mean a slow or overloaded server.

A timeout error code appears when your phone, browser or app sends a request and the reply does not come back within the time allowed, so the request is cancelled. It can show as "request timed out", "connection timed out", "504 Gateway Timeout" or "408 Request Timeout".

Think of calling someone and hanging up after a minute of ringing. The line may be fine, but the other person did not pick up in time. The cause can sit with your network, with the website, or with something in between. Below you will find how to find out which, what visitors can do, and what developers should look at for an HTTP timeout error code or an API timeout error code.

Common causes

  • 1Slow or unstable internet connection

How to tellMany sites load slowly, video buffers, speed drops on weak signal

What fixes itMove closer to the router or switch to mobile data and retry

  • 2Server overloaded or too slow to answer

How to tellOnly one site or app times out and other sites are fine

What fixes itWait and retry later; the owner must add capacity or speed things up

  • 3A heavy request that takes a long time

How to tellHappens when uploading big files or running a large report

What fixes itSend smaller parts, or try at a quiet time of day

  • 4Firewall, VPN or proxy blocking traffic

How to tellWorks on another network or with the VPN switched off

What fixes itTurn the VPN off and test; check firewall rules on a work network

  • 5DNS trouble

How to tellBrowser says the site is taking too long to respond, ping to the name fails

What fixes itRestart the router and try a different network

  • 6Gateway waiting on a backend server

How to tellThe page says 504 or shows an error page from the hosting layer

What fixes itSite owner checks the backend service and its time limit

  • 7A time limit set too low in the app

How to tellDevelopers see the failure at a fixed number of seconds every time

What fixes itRaise the limit sensibly or make the slow work run in the background

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Pause for a minute, then retry

Brief slowdowns on a network or server often pass quickly. Hold off for about a minute, then retry just once. Repeating the request many times in a row can make a busy server slower for everyone.

  2. Test another website

Open a very simple page. If it loads fast, your internet is fine and the slow one is the service you wanted. If it also hangs, work on your connection first using internet not working.

  3. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data

If the problem goes away on the other network, the first network is the weak link. Power the router off for half a minute and switch it back on. Phones can also fix a stale connection by turning airplane mode on and off.

  4. Turn off VPN, proxy and extra security tools

A VPN adds extra travel time and can be blocked by some services. Switch it off, reload, and see if the timeout error code disappears. On Windows, also check Settings, then Network and internet, then Proxy, to make sure no proxy is set by mistake.

  5. Check whether the service is slow for everyone

Have a friend on a different network try it, or read the service's own status page. If it is slow for them as well, you cannot fix it, and waiting is the right answer.

  6. Try a private window and clear the cache

Load the page in a fresh private tab. If it opens there, wipe the saved cache and cookies for that one site in your normal browser, since a damaged saved file can stall a page.

  7. Update the app or browser

Older versions may use outdated connection settings. Update through the app store or the browser's About page, then try again. If one app is the only problem, read apps and websites not working.

  8. Restart the device and contact support if it persists

A restart clears stuck network tasks. If a particular service times out for days on all networks, contact its support with the time, the message and a screenshot. Never share passwords or OTPs.

What a timeout error code means

Every network request has a stopwatch. If no answer arrives before the stopwatch ends, the program stops waiting and reports a timeout. The reason is not always a broken connection. A request can time out because the answer was simply too slow. There are limits on both sides: your browser or app has one, and servers and gateways have their own.

You press Submit on a long form and see This site can't be reached. The connection timed out. The page never arrived. Try again on a different network, and if it is a form that sends money or an order, check the order history before sending again.

API timeout error code for developers

When your own code calls an API, a timeout means the other service did not answer before your client's limit. Work through these points in order.

  • Separate connect time from read time. Many clients let you set both, and the failing one tells you if the server is unreachable or just slow.
  • Log how long each call takes so you know whether the limit is too short or the service really is slow.
  • Retry with a growing pause and a small maximum number of tries, instead of retrying instantly.
  • Make retries safe. A request that timed out may still have succeeded, so use a unique request key where the service supports it.
  • Move slow jobs to the background and let the client check for the result later.

How it differs from other error messages

A timeout is about time, not about wrong data or a crash. If the message is vague, compare with an error occurred. If the program closes completely, it is closer to a fatal error. For the full family of status codes, open the HTTP status codes page.

On payment and booking screens, a timeout does not tell you whether the action went through. Look at your bank, wallet or booking history before trying again, and use the in-app help for any dispute.

Frequently asked questions

What is a timeout error code?

It is a message that a request took longer than the allowed time, so it was cancelled. It may appear as a number such as 408 or 504, or as text like request timed out.

What is the HTTP timeout error code?

Two standard ones are 408 Request Timeout, where the server gave up waiting for your request, plus 504 Gateway Timeout, where a gateway waited too long for the server behind it.

How do I fix an API timeout error code?

Measure how long the call really takes, check connect and read limits separately, add careful retries with a pause, and move long jobs into the background. If the other service is slow, contact its provider.

Does a timeout error mean my internet is bad?

Not always. If other sites load quickly, the slow party is the service you asked for. Compare with a second network to find out.

Can a VPN cause a timeout?

Yes. A VPN adds distance and some services block it. Turn it off, test again, and use it only when needed.
