One earbud not working means sound plays in only one ear, or one side is dead, quiet or crackly. It happens with true wireless earbuds, neckband earphones and plain wired earphones, and the cause is different for each type.
For wireless buds the usual culprits are wax in the speaker mesh, one bud with a flat battery, or two buds that lost their link with each other. For wired earphones, a bent or frayed wire near the plug is the top suspect. Before you buy a new pair, test the simple things below. If the problem is on the phone side, such as quiet calls or no sound at all, see phone speaker not working, check volume button not working if the sound keys fail, and the phone problems hub covers other faults.
Common causes
1Wax or dust in the speaker mesh
How to tellSound is faint or muffled on one side, and the bud looks dirty
What fixes itBrush the mesh gently with a dry soft brush; never push a pin in
2One earbud has run out of charge
How to tellOne bud lights up in the case and the other does not
What fixes itPut both in the case, close the lid and charge for a while
3The two buds lost their link
How to tellLeft plays but right is silent, or one bud keeps disconnecting
What fixes itForget the earbuds on the phone and reset them as per the maker's steps
4Mono audio or balance set to one side
How to tellHappens with every earphone you try on this phone
What fixes itCentre the left right balance in Accessibility settings
5Dirty charging contacts in the case
How to tellA bud will not charge or the light flickers
What fixes itWipe the metal contacts on the bud and the case with a dry cloth
6Broken wire or loose plug on wired earphones
How to tellSound returns when you bend the cable or wiggle the plug
What fixes itTry another pair; a frayed cable usually means replacing the earphones
7Water damage or a dead driver
How to tellNo sound at all from one bud even when clean and charged
What fixes itWarranty claim or a new pair
How to fix it, step by step
Test on another device
Connect the earbuds to a different phone or a laptop. If the same side stays silent, the fault is in the earbud. If both sides work there, the original phone has a setting or Bluetooth problem.
Check the volume and balance settings
On Android, look in Accessibility for Mono audio and the left right sound balance. On iPhone, look in Accessibility, then Audio and Visual, for the balance slider. A slider pushed to one end, or mono switched on, makes one ear sound dead.
Charge both buds properly
Place both earbuds in the case, close the lid and plug in the case. Let it charge for at least half an hour, then open the lid and look at the lights. Buds often drain unevenly if one is used more for calls.
Clean the mesh and the charging contacts
Wipe the outside with a dry soft cloth. Use a clean dry toothbrush or a soft brush on the speaker mesh with light strokes, holding the mesh facing down so dirt falls out. Skip water, alcohol and pins, because they push dirt further in or break the mesh.
Remove and pair the earbuds again
Open Bluetooth settings (the Bluetooth not working page helps if the list stays empty), tap the earbuds, choose Forget or Unpair, and turn Bluetooth off and on. Put the buds in the case with the lid open and pair them again as new.
Reset the earbuds
Most earbuds have a reset method, such as holding a button on the case for several seconds until the light changes colour. The exact way depends on the model, so follow the manual. A reset makes the two buds find each other again.
Try one bud at a time
Take out the working bud and use only the silent one. If the quiet one now plays alone, the pairing between the buds was at fault, and a reset should fix it. If it stays silent alone, that bud is the problem.
Update the earbud firmware
Some brands offer an update through their own companion app. Install it only from your phone's official app store and keep the earbuds in the case near the phone while it runs.
Why one earbud stops while the other works
True wireless earbuds are two small radios. One bud connects to the phone and passes the audio to the other. If the second bud is empty, dirty or out of range, you hear sound on one side only. That is why a case reset, which makes both buds restart together, solves so many of these cases.
You take a call and hear nothing in the right ear, but music in the left ear is fine. Put both in the case, close the lid for 30 seconds, take them out and test again. If the right bud lights up in the case, charging is the issue, and if it does not, the contacts need cleaning.
One earbud not working: left side versus right side
For many models the left and right buds behave differently. The bud that connects to the phone first drains faster because it does more work, so it can be the one that dies early. Either side can fail, and the steps stay alike, whether it is a left airpod not working case or a right earbud one. Mark which side fails and whether it fails only on calls. A bud that works for music and fails on calls often points to a microphone or link problem, not a dead speaker.
Wired earphone one side not working
| Where | How it shows | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Plug | Sound cuts in and out when touched | Push firmly in, clean the port gently |
| Near the plug | Works only when the wire is bent | Replace the earphones |
| Near the bud | Crackle in one ear | Replace the earphones |
| Phone port | Every wired pair is silent on one side | Clean the port, then see a technician |
Check that the phone's charging and audio port is not full of lint. A soft wooden toothpick used with care can lift fluff, but stop if anything resists.
When to replace the earbud
If the bud is clean, charged, reset and still silent when paired alone, the speaker driver or battery has failed. Under warranty, ask the seller or brand service centre for a single bud replacement or an exchange. After the warranty, many brands sell single buds, which costs less than a new pair, though it depends on the brand and model.
Do not open an earbud or heat a battery to revive it. Small lithium cells can swell or catch fire, and opening a bud voids the warranty.
Keep both sides working longer
- Wipe the buds after every workout or long use.
- Do not wear them in the shower or rain unless they are rated for it.
- Charge the case regularly, even if you do not use the buds every day.
- Alternate which bud you use alone for calls.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my left earbud not working, and why does one side of my earphones sound dead?
The most common reasons are a flat battery on the left bud, wax in its mesh or a lost link between the two buds. Charge both, clean the mesh and reset the pair.
What to do if one earbud is not working after charging?
Wipe the charging contacts on the bud and the case, then place the bud in firmly. If the light still does not come on after a long charge, the bud battery may have failed.
Why is my right airpod type bud not working on calls only?
A bud that plays music but fails on calls can have a microphone or link fault. Try using each bud alone on a call and reset the pair.
Can one side earphone not working be repaired?
Wired earphones rarely repair well, since the wire breaks inside the cover. Wireless buds can sometimes be replaced one side at a time through the brand's service centre.
Why are my earphones not working on one side with every device?
If every phone and laptop gives the same result, the earbud or cable itself is damaged, not your settings.
