Flashlight not working on a phone usually means the LED is being held back by another app, by low battery or by heat, not that the bulb is dead. The torch icon may be greyed out, may flip on and off at once, or may switch on with no light at all.
The phone torch and the camera flash are the same small LED, so anything that stops one often stops the other. Work through the quick checks first. If the light fails even when the camera app is closed and the battery is good, the LED or its connection may need a technician, which is covered near the end. Related camera trouble is explained in phone camera not working.

How to fix it, step by step
Close the camera and other camera apps
Only one thing can control the LED at a time. Fully close the camera, any QR scanner, video call apps and social apps that have a camera inside. Then try the torch from the control panel again.
Try the torch from two places
Turn it on from the quick settings panel (swipe down on Android or open Control Centre on iPhone). Then try the camera app's flash in video mode. When only one of the two lights up, the LED is healthy and the fault is in software.
Charge the phone and check power saving
Many phones disable the torch at very low battery to save power. Plug in the charger and switch off battery saver or Low Power Mode. Then test again after a few minutes.
Cool the phone down
If the phone is warm from charging, gaming or sun, the torch may shut off to protect the battery. Take off the case, keep the phone in shade, and wait before trying again. Do not put it in a fridge or freezer.
Restart the phone
A restart resets the camera and flash service. Turn the phone fully off, wait for 30 seconds, and switch it on. Try the torch before opening any other app.
Update the system
Look for a pending system update under Settings and install it. Torch bugs are common after a major update and are usually fixed in the next small one.
Look at the LED and clean it
Find the small flash window beside the rear lens. Take the case off, make sure nothing sits over it, and rub it clean with a dry cloth. A cracked or yellowed window can weaken the beam.
Reset settings only if the rest failed
On both iPhone and Android you can reset all settings without erasing photos and apps, but you will lose saved Wi-Fi networks and personal tweaks. Back up first. Do not do a full erase for a torch problem unless a technician advises it.
iPhone torch not working: what is different
On an iPhone the torch button sits on the lock screen and in Control Centre. If it is greyed out, the phone is usually too hot, the camera is open, or the battery is critical. A temperature warning screen means the phone needs a rest. If the torch icon is missing from the lock screen, that is a design difference between models, not a fault. Pressing and holding the torch button changes brightness, so check that it is not on the lowest level.
Android flash light and mobile torch not working: what is different
Android phones usually have a torch tile in the quick settings panel, and some also support a shake or power button shortcut that you can turn on or off. The tile may be missing after an update; edit the quick settings layout to add it back. Some brands disable the torch during an active camera session or while a video call is running, which is normal.
Avoid downloading torch apps from unknown places just to test your phone. They need extra permissions and do nothing that the built-in torch cannot do.
Is the flashlight not working in the camera only, or everywhere
| Where it fails | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| Only when the camera is open | Normal sharing of the LED, or a camera app glitch |
| Torch icon is grey | Heat, low battery or software lock |
| Torch icon works but no light | LED or connector, or a stuck service |
| Light flickers | Loose contact or a weak battery under load |
When the flash needs a technician
If the torch and camera flash both fail after a restart, an update and cooling, the LED, its flex cable or the board that drives it may be at fault. Falls, water and past screen or battery repairs are the usual triggers. What a repair costs depends on whether the LED is a separate part or sits on the camera module, and on the model. After a splash or a fall, have the nearby parts checked too. A phone under warranty should go to an authorised centre, since opening it elsewhere can end the cover.
If your rear lens is also blurry or black, read back camera not working to check the connected parts, and see phone not charging if the battery is the weak link.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my flashlight not working on my phone, and why is the iPhone flash not working?
The most common reasons are another app using the camera, low battery, battery saver or heat. Close apps, charge the phone, let it cool and restart. If there is still no light, the LED may be faulty.
Why is my iPhone torch not working or greyed out?
A grey torch button usually means the phone is hot, the battery is very low or the camera is open. Cool the phone, charge it and close the camera. If it stays grey, restart.
Why is my torch not working but the camera flash works?
Then the LED is fine and the torch control is stuck. A restart and a system update usually fix it. Check that brightness on iPhone is not set to the lowest step.
Can a loose LED be fixed at home?
No. Opening a phone can damage the battery and screen cables, and it may end the warranty. Take it to a trained technician.
Is it normal for the torch to switch off by itself?
Yes when the phone is hot or the battery is very low. If it turns off in normal conditions, it is a sign of a software issue or a weak battery.
