A firestick not working is nearly always a case of power, the HDMI link, the Wi-Fi or full storage. The Amazon Fire TV Stick is a tiny computer, so it also hangs now and then and needs a restart.

This page covers a stick that shows nothing, sticks on the logo, freezes, buffers or crashes apps. If only the handset is at fault, read Fire TV remote not working. For the connection side, WiFi not working helps, and for the TV itself see TV not working.

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Use the wall adapter

Connect the micro or USB power cable that came in the box to its own wall adapter. TV USB ports often give too little power. Unplugging it for a minute also restarts the stick.

  2. Pick the right input on the TV

Press Input or Source on the TV and choose the HDMI port where the stick sits. If you changed ports, the TV may still look at the old one.

  3. Reseat the stick or use the extender

Pull the stick out of the HDMI port and push it back in. If it is crowded by the wall or a soundbar, fit the small HDMI extender from the box. It also helps Wi-Fi and remote range.

  4. Restart from the menu if you can

If you reach the home screen, open Settings, then My Fire TV, and choose Restart. A planned restart is gentler than pulling the plug.

  5. Check the Wi-Fi

Open Settings, then Network, and join your Wi-Fi again. If the stick sees the network but the apps buffer, restart the router and test the speed on a phone. If that fails too, see internet not working.

  6. Free up some storage

In Settings, open Applications, then Manage Installed Applications. Remove apps you rarely open and clear cache or data for heavy apps. A stick with little free space acts slow and unstable.

  7. Install pending updates

Go to Settings, My Fire TV, About, and check for system updates. Keep power on during the update. Also update the apps that crash.

  8. Try another TV or HDMI port

If the stick works on another TV, the first TV port or its settings were the problem. If it fails everywhere, move on to a reset or to Amazon support.

  9. Reset to factory settings

Use this last. In Settings, My Fire TV, choose Reset to Factory Defaults. If the screen is stuck, use the remote and hold Back + Right for about ten seconds. Your apps and sign in will be removed, so you will need to set the stick up again.

Apps freezing, buffering or not opening

If one app fails while the rest work, clear its data, update it and sign in again. If every app buffers, the cause is the network. Check whether other devices at home stream without trouble, and move the router out of cupboards. The stick can use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band on many models, which is faster close to the router. Streaming also needs a working account, so make sure that the service you pay for is active. For a general app problem, the apps and websites guide has more.

When the stick needs replacing

If the stick fails on a different TV with the original adapter and cable, and a factory reset does not help, the hardware may be faulty. Check the warranty period on your purchase and contact Amazon support. Repairing it yourself is not practical and opening the casing is not advised. A replacement stick costs less than most TV repairs, so replacement is usually the sensible route.

Only use the official adapter or one with the same rating. Unknown chargers can underpower or damage the stick. Do not install unofficial app packages, as they may be unsafe.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my amazon fire tv stick not working suddenly?

Sudden faults come from power, a changed TV input, a hung system or the Wi-Fi. Use the wall adapter, restart the stick and check the source on the TV.

Why does my Fire TV Stick keep restarting?

The most common reason is low power from a TV USB port. Switch to the wall adapter. Heat and a full storage can also cause it.

How do I reset a Fire TV Stick that will not start?

With a paired remote, hold Back and Right together for about ten seconds and follow the screen. This restores factory settings, so you must sign in again.

Why does my firestick say no signal?

The TV is on the wrong HDMI source, or the stick has no power. Check the source and the power light, and reseat the stick.

Why is the firestick buffering so much?

A weak Wi-Fi link or a slow connection is the usual cause. Restart the router, move it closer and clear unused apps from the stick.

Does the Fire TV Stick need a remote to work?

It needs one to navigate, but the phone app can replace the remote on the same Wi-Fi.
