Arrow Keys Not Working in Excel: Why the Cursor Will Not Move

Quick answer When the arrow keys scroll the whole sheet instead of moving between cells, Scroll Lock is on. Turn it off, then check edit mode, Sticky Keys and add-ins.

Arrow keys not working in Excel almost always has a simple reason: the keys themselves are fine, but Excel is in a mode where they do something else. The classic case is the sheet sliding sideways or up and down while the selected cell stays where it is. That is Scroll Lock behaviour, and it takes one key press to undo.

If that is not it, the cause is usually that you are still typing inside a cell, the keyboard has a locked function layer, or a setting such as Sticky Keys is changing what the keys do. Below are the checks in the order that fixes most laptops and desktops. If the arrow keys also fail in other programs, jump to the laptop keyboard not working guide.

Common causes

  • 1Scroll Lock is switched on

How to tellThe whole sheet moves and the active cell stays still; status bar may show Scroll Lock

What fixes itPress Scroll Lock, or use the on-screen keyboard to turn it off

  • 2The cell is still in edit mode

How to tellArrows move the text cursor inside the cell, not to the next cell

What fixes itPress Enter or Esc to finish the entry, then use the arrows

  • 3You are building a formula

How to tellArrows change a cell reference in the formula instead of moving

What fixes itPress Enter or Esc first

  • 4Num Lock is off and you use the numeric pad arrows

How to tellOnly the number pad arrows fail, the separate arrow keys work

What fixes itPress Num Lock, or use the main arrow keys

  • 5Sticky Keys or Filter Keys is active

How to tellKeys behave slowly or as if a Shift key is held

What fixes itSwitch both off from the Accessibility page

  • 6An add-in or a macro is interfering

How to tellProblem happens only in one file or only in Excel

What fixes itStart Excel in safe mode and disable add-ins one at a time

  • 7Dropdown, filter or protected sheet has focus

How to tellArrows move through a list instead of the cells

What fixes itClick on a cell, press Esc, and check sheet protection

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Look for Scroll Lock on the status bar

Right click the grey bar at the bottom of the Excel window. If Scroll Lock is listed with a tick or shows ON, it is active. Press the Scroll Lock key to turn it off. The key is often labelled ScrLk and sits near Print Screen and Pause.

  2. Turn it off with the on-screen keyboard

Many laptops have no Scroll Lock key. Press the Windows key, type On-Screen Keyboard, open it, and click the ScrLk key on the screen once. The status bar will confirm the change. Some laptops hide it behind an Fn combination, so check the key legends on yours.

  3. Finish whatever you are typing

Press Esc to cancel the entry, or Enter to accept it. If the status bar says Edit or Enter on the left, Excel is waiting for you to finish the cell before arrows can jump between cells.

  4. Check Num Lock and the Fn lock

If only the arrows on the number pad are dead, press Num Lock. On some laptops the arrow keys share space with Page Up and Page Down, and a locked Fn layer changes what they do. Try Fn + Esc if your keyboard shows a small lock symbol there.

  5. Disable Sticky Keys and Filter Keys

In Windows settings, find the Accessibility section and its keyboard page, then flip the switches for Sticky Keys and Filter Keys to off. Pressing Shift five times can switch Sticky Keys on by accident, which is why this appears suddenly.

  6. Test in another file and another program

Open a new blank workbook. If the arrows work there, the first file has a macro, a frozen pane or protection causing it. If the arrows fail in Notepad too, the issue is the keyboard or Windows, not Excel.

  7. Start Excel in safe mode

Hold Ctrl while opening Excel and say yes to safe mode. If arrows now work, an add-in is to blame. Go to File, Options, Add-ins, and disable them one by one.

  8. Try an external keyboard

Plug in a USB keyboard. If its arrow keys work, the laptop keyboard has a hardware fault or a stuck key. See some keyboard keys not working for cleaning and driver steps.

Arrow keys not working in Excel: why the sheet scrolls instead

In normal mode, the arrow keys change which cell is selected. With Scroll Lock on, Excel treats the same keys like a scroll bar, so the view slides and the selection stays put. Scroll Lock is a leftover from old keyboards, so most people turn it on by a stray press and never notice.

You press the down arrow in a salary sheet and the rows slide up, but cell B2 stays highlighted. Look at the status bar: Scroll Lock is shown. One press of the key brings everything back to normal.

Up and down arrow not working in Excel on a laptop

Laptop keyboards add extra reasons. Smaller layouts combine keys, a function lock may be on, and dust under a key can stop one arrow while the rest work. When only up and down fail, but left and right work, think of a worn key or a driver problem. When all four fail together, think of a mode such as Scroll Lock.

  • Left and right fine, up and down dead: test on an external keyboard.
  • All four dead in Excel only: Scroll Lock, edit mode or an add-in.
  • All four dead everywhere: restart, then look at the keyboard driver in Device Manager.

Shift arrow and other combos that seem broken

Shift with an arrow selects cells and Ctrl with an arrow jumps to the edge of the data. If these do nothing, the cause is often the same Scroll Lock state or Sticky Keys. In a filtered or grouped sheet, Ctrl with an arrow may skip hidden rows, which looks like a fault but is only Excel respecting the filter.

When to get the keyboard checked

If a single arrow key stays dead in every program and on a fresh Windows account, the switch under that key may be worn or liquid may have reached it. A repair shop can replace a laptop keyboard, and the price depends mainly on the laptop model and whether the keyboard is built into the top case.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my arrow keys not working in Excel?

Most often Scroll Lock is on, so the sheet scrolls instead of the cell selection moving. Press Scroll Lock or turn it off from the on-screen keyboard, then press an arrow key to test.

Arrows not working in Excel on a laptop with no Scroll Lock key. What now?

Open the On-Screen Keyboard from the Start menu and click ScrLk once. Some laptops also use an Fn combination, which is printed on the keys.

Why do my arrow keys move text inside the cell and not between cells?

You are in edit mode. Press Enter or Esc to leave the cell, then the arrows will move between cells again.

Arrow keys work in other programs but not in Excel. What now?

Open a new workbook, then start Excel in safe mode by holding Ctrl while opening it. If it works there, disable add-ins one at a time. Also check for a macro or sheet protection in the original file.

Why is the keyboard not working in Excel only, with arrow buttons dead?

The Windows version does not matter much. It is usually Scroll Lock, Sticky Keys or a locked function layer on the laptop keyboard.
