This site is not affiliated with Cloudflare; this is an independent explanation.
The 522 error code means Connection Timed Out. A website that uses Cloudflare has two machines in the chain: the Cloudflare server that you talk to, and the real server where the site is stored. A 522 appears when Cloudflare tried to open a connection to the real server and got no answer before the time limit.
This is not a standard HTTP code from the official list. It is a code that only Cloudflare sends, so you will never see it on a site that does not use that service. The message on screen is usually "Error 522: Connection timed out", with a small diagram showing the browser as working, Cloudflare as working and the host as the broken part. For a visitor, that diagram is the whole story: your phone and your internet are fine.
Common causes
1Origin server is overloaded or frozen
How to tellSite was fine earlier, now every page times out, often at busy hours
What fixes itHost restarts the server or adds capacity; visitors wait and retry
2Origin server is switched off or crashed
How to tellError stays for a long time and does not change with reloads
What fixes itOwner starts the server or asks the hosting company to do it
3Firewall blocks Cloudflare addresses
How to tellBegan after a security plugin or firewall change on the host
What fixes itOwner allows Cloudflare IP ranges in the server firewall
4Wrong origin IP address in DNS settings
How to tellStarted after moving to a new host or changing server
What fixes itOwner updates the A record to the new server address
5Keepalive or connection limits too strict
How to tellSome pages load, others time out, mostly when traffic rises
What fixes itOwner raises connection limits and enables keepalive on the server
6Network problem between the host and Cloudflare
How to tellHosting company reports packet loss or a routing fault
What fixes itHost fixes the route; owner can only open a support ticket
How to fix it, step by step
Wait two minutes, then reload
A short overload often ends by itself. Give it a couple of minutes, then reload the page once: Ctrl + F5 on a computer, or a downward swipe on a phone. Do not hammer the refresh button, because extra requests make a struggling server slower.
Try the site on another network
If you were on Wi-Fi, try the page over mobile data, or do the reverse. If it fails on both, the fault is not near you. If it works on one, your home network or your phone's data path is the odd one out.
Ask someone else to open the page
Message a friend in another city to try. Two or three people failing at the same moment is a clear sign that the origin server is down for everyone.
Try a different page of the same site
Open the home page or an older article. A light page may still come from Cloudflare's saved copy, while a login, cart or search needs the real server and will time out.
Test it without saved data
Load the address in an incognito tab, which starts with no saved cookies. This rules out a stuck cookie or a bad saved page. If it opens, delete that site's cookies and cached files.
Report it if the error lasts
Still failing after an hour? Find the site's social media account or support email and tell them you see a 522. Owners often learn about the fault from visitors first.
Owners: check that the server is running
Log in to your hosting panel and confirm the server is on and not out of memory or disk space. Restart the web service if it is stuck, then reload the site.
Owners: allow Cloudflare through the firewall
A firewall that treats Cloudflare traffic as an attack will cause a 522 even when the server is healthy. Allow the published Cloudflare address ranges in your server firewall and any security tool, then test again.
What a 522 error code means, step by step
When you open the site, your browser first connects to Cloudflare. Cloudflare then opens a second connection to the origin, which is the machine holding the site files. That second connection needs a quick handshake first. If the origin does not answer the handshake within about fifteen seconds, Cloudflare gives up and shows you a 522.
You open a college admission page and see Error 522: Connection timed out with a green tick under Browser and Cloudflare, and a red cross under Host. The red cross is the part to read: the host, not your phone, is not replying.
522 compared with 521, 524 and 504
| Code | What happened | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| 521 | Origin refused the connection | Web server is off or blocking |
| 522 | Origin stayed silent until the time limit ran out | Overload, firewall or network path |
| 524 | Connection worked but the reply took too long | Slow script or heavy query |
| 504 | Gateway lost patience with the server behind it | Upstream server speed |

Can a visitor fix a 522 error?
Mostly no. The break is between Cloudflare and the host, two machines you cannot reach. What you can do is confirm it is not your side, avoid repeated refreshing and come back later. If the page is something urgent, such as a form deadline or a ticket booking, look for the site's phone or app.
Never install a browser add-on or tool that claims to fix 522 errors. The fault is not on your device, so there is nothing for such tools to repair.
How site owners fix a 522
- Confirm the origin is reachable by connecting to its address directly, outside the CDN, from another network.
- Check server load for full memory, full disk or a runaway process, and restart services if needed.
- Check the DNS record for the site and make sure it points to the current server address, not an old one.
- Review the firewall and rate limits so they do not drop or slow requests from Cloudflare.
- Ask the host about network issues if all of the above look fine; a routing fault on their side shows up as a 522.
Moving to a plan with more memory and processor power helps sites that time out only during traffic peaks. What it costs depends on how many visitors you expect at once.
Frequently asked questions
What is error code 522?
It is a Cloudflare error that says the connection to the website's real server timed out. The server did not reply fast enough, so no page could be shown.
What is the HTTP error 522 meaning in Hindi?
In simple Hindi terms, it means the site's server did not respond in time, so the connection timed out. The fault is with the website or its host, not your phone or internet.
Error code 522 how to fix: what can a visitor do?
Wait a few minutes, reload once, and test on another network. If it still fails, the site owner must fix it, and you can only try again later.
Is the 522 error code the same as 504?
They are close cousins. A 504 is a standard code for a gateway that waited too long. A 522 is the Cloudflare version that says the first connection to the origin timed out.
Does a 522 mean my internet is down?
No. A dead connection could not even load this error page, so seeing it proves your phone reached Cloudflare without trouble.
